CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Portland State women's soccer team fell in its non-conference finale on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 3-2 result to Southern Utah at Thunderbird Soccer Field.
With the loss, the Vikings fell to 1-5-2 on the season, while the Thunderbirds—who entered the match winless—earned their first victory to improve to 1-5-2.
Southern Utah opened the scoring in the 13th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Portland State answered immediately, with Bianca Potesta netting her first collegiate goal in the 14th minute. Just before halftime, Sydney Spotts put the Vikings ahead, finishing a ball from Camilla Contreras Bran in the 43rd minute for her first career goal.
The Thunderbirds rallied in the second half, finding the equalizer in the 70th minute and netting the game-winner just six minutes later.
Portland State finished with 10 shots, six of which were on target. Goalkeeper Finley Crabtree played the full 90 minutes, recording three saves.
The Vikings will now take a week off before opening Big Sky Conference play. They begin their conference slate on the road against Weber State on Thursday, Oct. 2 (6:00 p.m. PT / 7:00 p.m. MT).
