OGDEN, Utah -Â The Portland State women's soccer team picked up their first road win of the year when it mattered most, defeating Weber State 1-0 in their Big Sky Conference opener on Thursday evening at Wildcat Soccer Field.
With the victory, the Vikings improved to 2-5-2 overall and 1-0-0 in Big Sky play, while handing the Wildcats (8-5-0, 2-1-0) their first conference loss of 2025. Weber State entered the match atop the Big Sky standings with a 2-0-0 record against conference opponents.
Portland State struck early, scoring the eventual game-winner just 10:29 into the match. Ocean Rideout dropped a clever backheel pass to Bianca Potesta, who found Aliayha Saldana in stride. Saldana buried the Vikings' first conference goal of the season to put them ahead 1-0.
Weber State ramped up the pressure after the early goal, especially in the second half, finishing with 20 total shots—14 of which came after the break. Despite the onslaught, goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham and the Vikings' defense stood firm, denying every opportunity to earn their first shutout of the season.
True to form, Portland State capitalized on limited offensive chances, scoring on one of their five total shots and placing two others on frame. Cunningham recorded six saves en route to her first win of the season in goal.
The Vikings will look to carry their momentum into Sunday's matchup against Idaho State in Pocatello. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT / noon MT.
