POCATELLO, Idaho – The Portland State women's soccer team was just minutes away from securing a second consecutive road shutout on Sunday, but an 88th-minute goal from Idaho State dashed those hopes, as the Vikings fell 1-0 at Davis Field.
Coming off a strong conference-opening win Thursday at first-place Weber State, the Vikings suffered their first Big Sky loss of the season, dropping to 2-6-2 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. With the win, Idaho State improved to 4-5-3 overall and 1-1-1 in Big Sky action.
Both teams shared possession and generated chances throughout Sunday's contest. Portland State out-shot Idaho State 14-11, including six shots on goal.
After a scoreless first half and a quiet start to the second, the Vikings mounted a flurry of pressure — earning two corner kicks on four shot attempts in a two-minute span. Despite PSU's late push, it was the Bengals who found the breakthrough. In the 88th minute, a header was saved by Viking goalkeeper
Natalie Cunningham but rebounded to Isabella Winton, who slotted home the game-winner.
Cunningham recorded four saves in the match, while
Kainani Jacang and
Ocean Rideout each put two shots on goal to lead the Vikings offensively.
Portland State will look to regain the momentum from Thursday's win as they return home to host Northern Arizona on Thursday, Oct. 9 at Hillsboro Stadium. The match, originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m., has been moved up to a 12:00 p.m. kickoff.
