HILLSBORO, Ore. - The Portland State women's soccer team earned its second conference win—first at home—on Thursday afternoon, topping Northern Arizona 1-0 in dramatic fashion at Hillsboro Stadium.
The victory improved the Vikings to 3-6-2 overall and 2-1-0 in Big Sky play, while the Lumberjacks dropped to 4-4-5 overall and 1-2-1 in Big Sky play.
The Lumberjacks recorded four shots in the opening 20 minutes Thursday, including two on target—both saved by Viking goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham. Those attempts proved to be their best two chances of the match, as they failed to put a shot on target in the final 70 minutes of action.
Trading possession and struggling to find chances, the squads remained scoreless for the entire first half and much of the second. However, the Vikings picked up the pace offensively after the break, doubling their shot total and out-shooting NAU 10-4 in the final 45 minutes.
Portland State finally broke through in the closing moments, when a strike from Ocean Rideout at the top of the box ricocheted off the side crossbar and deflected off a Northern Arizona defender into the back of the net—securing the Vikings' 1-0 win in the 87th minute.
The own goal marked the first of the season for Portland State, but it was the fourth goal scored in their favor after the 80th minute this year. The Vikings' attack tallied 15 shot attempts to Northern Arizona's 10, led by Rideout, who recorded a season-high five shots in the contest. Cunningham, who secured her second shutout in three matches, finished with two saves.
Portland State will now hit the road to face Northern Colorado on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. MT at Jackson Stadium in Greeley.
