Vikings Battle Bears to 1-1 Draw

GREELEY, Colo. - The Portland State women's soccer team jumped out to a first-half lead on the road Sunday afternoon but couldn't hold on, settling for a 1-1 draw against Northern Colorado at Jackson Stadium.

Coming off a key Big Sky Conference win at home on Thursday, the Vikings moved to 3-6-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play. The Bears, meanwhile, sit at 2-8-5 overall and 1-2-1 in Big Sky action.

Grace Sarabia gave Portland State the early advantage in the 19th minute, redirecting a free kick from Kainani Jacang into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

The Vikings controlled much of the first half defensively, holding Northern Colorado to just three shots before the break. However, it took the Bears less than four minutes into the second half to equalize, leveling the match at 1-1 in the 49th minute.

Northern Colorado carried the momentum through much of the second half, recording 14 shots while earning nine corner kicks following their goal. Despite the pressure, goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham and the Portland State back line held firm to secure the draw. Cunningham finished with six saves on the day.

Portland State out-shot the Bears 19-17 overall, led by Aliayha Saldana's six attempts, three of which were on target.

The Vikings return home for a pair of Big Sky matches this week. They'll host Eastern Washington on Thursday, Oct. 16, followed by Idaho on Sunday, Oct. 19, both at Hillsboro Stadium.
