HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Portland State women's soccer team found itself in yet another scoreless tie late into Thursday's match against Eastern Washington, but an 87th-minute goal from the Eagles broke the deadlock, handing the Vikings their second conference loss of the year.
The Vikings fell to 3-7-3 on the season and 2-2-1 in Big Sky play, while the Eagles improved to 6-6-4 overall and 2-3-1 in conference action.
Both teams traded possession for much of the first half, creating chances but failing to capitalize, combining for 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The intensity picked up in the second half, seeing both sides nearly break the deadlock. Natalie Cunningham kept the Eagles off the board for 86 full minutes before Chloe Pattison found the back of the net in the 87th, putting Eastern Washington ahead. The Vikings pressed in the final moments, earning a corner kick with 20 seconds remaining, but the Eagles held firm to secure the win.
The Vikings outshot the Eagles 14-11, with both teams combining for 15 shots on goal. Portland State's Natalie Cunningham and Eastern Washington goalkeeper Kamryn Willoughby each recorded seven saves.
The Vikings will look to bounce back on Sunday when they return to Hillsboro Stadium to host Idaho in a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
