Vikings Find Attack in Second Half, But Still Fall 1-0 at UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The Portland State women's soccer team put six shots on frame in the second half Sunday at UNLV, but they could not find an equalizer as the Rebels beat the Vikings, 1-0, at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

The Rebels (1-1-0) went ahead in the 20th minute, as UNLV's Kaitlin Taylor slotted a shot past PSU goalkeeper Finley Crabtree into the bottom left corner of the goal. The Rebels stayed on the front foot for the rest of the half, going into the break with a 6-to-2 shot advantage.

Things flipped in the second half, however. Without a shot on goal through their first three halves of the season, the Vikings (0-2-0) finally found more success in the attack in the second 45 minutes Sunday. They outshot the Rebels 9-to-5 in the second half while putting six of those on frame. Six different players recorded the Vikings' six shots on goal, as the threat came from everywhere.

UNLV goalkeeper Riley Hodson – who played for the Vikings in 2025 – kept her former teammates out of goal, however. The Vikings are still chasing their first goal of the season, after Oregon held them scoreless in a 3-0 win over the Vikings Thursday.

The Vikings will look for that breakthrough next week, when they play at Cal Baptist Thursday, then at San Diego State Sunday. Kickoff for Thursday's match against CBU is scheduled for 7 p.m.

MATCH NOTES:
  • The Vikings fall to 1-2-1 all-time against the Rebels with Sunday's loss.
  • Aliayha Saldana and Ocean Rideout led the Vikings with two shots each. They both returned to the starting lineup after beginning Thursday's season opener against the Ducks on the bench.
  • UNLV held a 13-to-2 advantage in corners, though the Vikings successfully defended every corner.
  • The Rebels controlled 61 percent of the possession in the first half, but in the second half, it was a relatively even split of 51-49 between the Rebels and Vikings.
