Vikings Top Wolves 2-1 in Home Opener

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team kicked off its 2025 home schedule Sunday afternoon, netting a late goal to defeat Western Oregon, 2-1, at Hillsboro Stadium.

The win marked the Vikings' sixth straight victory over the Wolves, as they improved to 1-1-1 on the season. The contest was an exhibition for WOU, which will officially open its season in September.

It was a fairly quiet first half, with all three goals coming in the final 45 minutes of action. The Vikings had a handful of chances early, recording 13 shots—eight of which were on goal—but Wolves goalkeeper Isabella Lopez kept them off the board.

Portland State broke through in the second half when a well-struck shot from Aliayha Saldana was saved, and Yammile Picon tapped in the deflection to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute. Just over 14 minutes later, the Wolves responded with an equalizer off a corner kick to make it 1-1. But the Vikings weren't done. In the 81st minute, Ocean Rideout netted the game-winner—her fourth career game-winning goal—curling a shot inside the far post after Bianca Potesta's cross found her in the box. The Vikings were able to hold the Wolves scoreless the rest of the way to secure their first win of the season.

In her first collegiate start in goal, Finley Crabtree earned her first victory as a Viking, making two saves in the 2-1 victory. Portland State tallied 26 shots, its highest single-game total since 2023. Ten Vikings contributed to the shot total, with Saldana leading the effort with seven attempts, including four on target.

Sunday's match marked the beginning of a four-game homestand for the Vikings, who will return to action this Thursday, Aug. 28, against Grand Canyon at Hillsboro Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
