HILLSBORO, Ore. - The Portland State women's soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season Thursday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Grand Canyon at Hillsboro Stadium.
The Vikings (1-2-1) and Lopes (2-1-0) played to a scoreless first half, combining for just two shots in the opening 30 minutes. Portland State generated chances both early and late in the period—earning four corner kicks in the opening minutes and tallying four shots in the final 10. Despite the pressure, the Vikings couldn't find the back of the net.
Grand Canyon broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, converting off a short corner that set up a long strike lofted over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham. The Vikings struggled to regain their rhythm after conceding, managing just one shot over the final half-hour as Grand Canyon closed out the 1-0 victory.
The Lopes outshot the Vikings 13-10, putting five attempts on goal compared to Portland State's six. Freshman Bianca Potesta led the Viking attack with four shots, while Cunningham played the full 90 minutes in net, tallying four saves.
The Vikings now turn their attention to next week as they prepare to host CSUN in a non-conference matchup on Thursday, Sept. 4, at Hillsboro Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6Â p.m.
