Daniel Coppedge Smashes 54-Year-Old School Record in Hammer on First Day of Oregon Preview

RESULTS

EUGENE, Ore. —
The last time there was a new school record in the men's hammer at Portland State, Steve Prefontaine was still running for Oregon at Hayward Field. The ghost of Prefontaine must have been with Daniel Coppedge Friday, then, as the Viking junior broke a 54-year-old mark in the hammer on the opening day of the Oregon Preview.

Coppedge initially broke the mark on his second attempt of the day, then bettered it twice more before topping out at 186-10 (56.96m) on his fifth attempt. The mark put Coppedge more than 10 feet past Steve James' old record of 176-00 (53.64m), which he set in 1971.

Coppedge, who placed fourth in the hammer Friday, now has two school records to his name. Besides Friday's record in the hammer, he also broke a 22-year-old mark in the weight throw during the indoor season.

He could still add to his record in hammer later in the outdoor season, as his overall best in the event still stands at 193-02 (58.87m) from the 2023 NWAC Championships. Friday marked Coppedge's first meet of the outdoor season, leaving plenty of opportunities to add distance to his new record.

Noah Meucci dropped to third in the all-time rankings in the hammer with Coppedge's entrance at the top. He placed 10th with a best throw of 159-00 (48.47m). That couldn't match Meucci's personal best of 168-02 (51.27m) from the L&C Electric Forest Opener on March 8.

Outside of the hammer, the Vikings picked up two heat wins out of Emma Stolte and Ania Kapustka in the women's 1,500 meters. Stotle won going away, taking the lead at the bell and then putting everybody in her rearview mirror as she beat the No. 2 finisher, Idaho's Jesse Redding, by close to four seconds in 4:36.06.

Stolte is now 2-for-2 in the 1,500 meters this outdoor season. Besides Friday's heat win, she recorded an overall win at the L&C Electric Forest Opener in a personal best of 4:35.64. She won that race by a wide margin, too, as she beat the No. 2 finisher by close to nine seconds.

Kapustka, meanwhile, ran a brave race in the opening heat of the 1,500 meters. She pushed the pace early, holding a 10-meter lead through the opening two laps of the race. Idaho's Pia Kircher and Southern Oregon's Cammeo Ramirez challenged her at the bell, however. Kapustka pushed back, re-taking the lead over the final 200 meters and winning in a new collegiate best of 4:39.20.

Teammate Taylor Nichols ran in the same heat as Kapustka and set a new personal best of 4:47.17 while finishing seventh in the section.

Freshman Nick Moore nearly pulled off a miraculous win on the men's side of the 1,500 meters. He was 11th at the bell in his heat of the race but then moved up to second by the end with a blazing final lap of 59.687 seconds. That was easily the best lap in the field and nearly gave him the win over Seattle's Lance Mason. Moore finished only one one-hundredth of a second behind Mason, crossing the line in 3:58.76 to Mason's 3:58.75.

Moore's time moves him up to sixth in the freshman rankings within the 1,500 meters. He broke the freshman record in the indoor mile earlier in the season, finishing in 4:16.04 at the UW Invitational.

Jackson Mathers moved into the top 10 of the freshman rankings in the men's high jump earlier in the day. Mathers cleared 6-00.75 (1.85m) in the event, setting a new PSU best by three inches and moving him up to ninth in the freshman rankings.

Alison Calvin-Stupfel continued her recovery from an injury on the women's side of the high jump. She cleared her first bar since the Spokane Invitational in December, going over on her second attempt at 5-01.00 (1.55m).

Henry Glad was the only other Viking in action Friday, as he placed 13th in the javelin with a best throw of 159-00 (48.47m).

The Vikings will continue at the Oregon Preview Saturday, starting with the men's long jump at 1:45 p.m.
