Vikings Claim Five Heat Wins, Seven Personal Bests on Day Two of Riverfront Invitational

RESULTS

SPOKANE, Wash. —
The Portland State track & field set an ambitious goal for itself going into the Riverfront Invitational. The Vikings aimed for three school records at The Podium. They got one out of the men's weight throw Friday, and while they didn't get another Saturday, the goal still pushed them to seven personal bests, five heat wins and a seasonal best from the 4x400-meter relay.

The Vikings had hoped to challenge for the record in the men's 600 meters Saturday. While they missed out on it, no one can fault Amir Ahmed and Abdinajib Abade as they both won their heats. Ahmed won in 1:21.73, beating out Spokane CC's Nathan Russel, who finished in 1:21.86. Abade, meanwhile, won his heat by nearly half a second with his finish in 1:22.54, moving him up to sixth all-time in the event.

Freshman Nick Moore jumped up to fourth in the freshman record book in the men's 3k. He finished in 8:35.98, shaving 12.5 seconds off his time on the same track at the Spokane Invitational in December.

The Viking women's 4x400-meter relay team, meanwhile, set the fastest indoor relay time for the team since 2018 with its finish in 3:57.07. Ashley Peterson, Tori Forst, Irina López and Wendy Hare ran the relay for the Vikings Saturday, setting a seasonal best by more than six and a half seconds. No women's team has run a faster relay indoors since Katie Baxter, Nia Powdrell, Kristen O'Handley and Maya Jackson finished in 3:56.68 at the 2018 UW Invitational.

Forst also led the Vikings in the opening event of the day, the 60 meters. Forst finished in 7.72 seconds, four-hundredths of a second faster than her time on the same track at the Spokane Invitational in December. Sienna Rosario also cracked eight seconds for the first time while winning their heat in 7.99 seconds. That's 12-hundredths of a second faster than Rosario's time last week at the UW Invitational.

Ty Hawkins led the Vikings on the men's side of the 60 meters, shaving four-hundredths of a second off his time from last week with his finish in 7.21 seconds. Dillon Brost matched his personal best from the UW Preview on Jan. 17 while finishing in 7.23 seconds. Brost ran his first open 400-meter race later in the day, and finished in 51.12 seconds.

Wendy Hare and Ashley Peterson both won their heats on the women's side of the 400 meters. Hare won her heat by more than three-quarters of a second while finishing her first 400 of the season in 58.66 seconds. Peterson, meanwhile, held off a late push from Cal Poly Humboldt's Cocome McKamey while winning her heat in 59.61 seconds.

Abdi Ibrahim placed sixth overall in the mile with his finish in 4:16.32. That shaved two seconds off his time from the UW Invitational last week, and bettered his personal best of 4:16.93 from last year's Big Sky Indoor Championships at The Podium.

The Vikings will compete Sunday at the Portland Indoor 2 at the University of Portland's Chiles Center. Saturday's athletes will return to action next week at the Husky Classic, Feb. 14-15.

What motivation the Viking coaches will set for themselves at that meet remains to be seen. But Saturday's meet showed that even if the primary goal doesn't come, being ambitious can lead to a number of secondary accomplishments.
