Nick Moore Runs Fastest Mile Time by PSU Freshman since 2016 to Lead Vikings at Mile City Meet

RESULTS

SEATTLE, Wash. —
Saturday at Dempsey Indoor Facility served as a middle school fitness test where everyone ran the mile. Except these milers were a heck of a lot faster than any middle school kid as the Vikings took part in the Mile City meet at the University of Washington.

The meet featured section after section of the mile for both the men and women in attendance. That gave the Vikings a chance to test their milers, most of whom were fresh faces. Campbell Faust and Tom Thake provided the veteran touch while the Vikings otherwise ran four freshmen and a sophomore.

One of the freshmen, Nick Moore, led the Viking men at the meet. He placed fifth in his heat and 72nd overall with his time of 4:24.32. That was less than two seconds off Moore's outdoor 1,600-meter best from high school, which is a shorter distance than the mile. Moore's mile time is the fastest by a Viking freshman since Alex Cisneros ran 4:21.92 in 2016. He now sits fifth in the freshman record books.

Fellow freshman Luis Muradas posted the No. 2 time for the Viking men, finishing in 4:32.97 while placing second in his heat. Muradas beat his 1,600-meter best from high school by over four seconds with his finish.

A freshman also led the Viking women, as Emily Schmitke finished in 5:32.98 while placing 15th in her heat. Faust ran in the same heat as Schmitke and finished 18th in 5:44.56.

Freshman Talise Wapsheli placed third in her heat while finishing in 5:47.81. That shaved 12 seconds off the time Wapsheli ran at the Spokane Invitational back in December.

Thake provided a new personal best for the Viking men as he shaved over five seconds off his time with his finish in 4:42.09. His previous best came from his prep career. Thake posted an even bigger improvement when comparing his best at Portland State. Thake's time Saturday was 16 seconds better than his best finish last season, which was his first as a Viking.

Lyness Ota rounded out the Viking men's crew with his finish in 5:05.00.

The Vikings will next compete at the UP Indoor #1 on Jan. 26. They'll return to the Dempsey Indoor facility in two weeks for the UW Invitational, Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
