BOZEMAN, Mont. — Dieumerci Migani can only apologize for the snow that dumped on Bobcat Track and Field Complex earlier in the week. His cold bloodedness drops the temperature by 30 degrees wherever he goes. Migani showed that chill under pressure Friday, setting the school record in the 100 meters while scoring for the Vikings with a fifth-place finish in the long jump at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships.
Â
Migani broke a 21-year-old school record in the men's 100 meters while finishing the prelims in 10.51 seconds. Migani jumped from just outside of the top 10 – his personal best of 10.85 seconds coming into the meet was one one-hundredth of a second behind the No. 10 mark at the time – to the top of the pile. Just like that. He finished three-hundredths of a second under the old record that Jim Settam had held since 2003 with his time of 10.54 seconds.
Â
Migani set himself up for a chance to break the record again Saturday, as he was the lone Viking competing Friday to advance out of the prelims of their event. Migani qualified on time after missing out on a top-two auto bid by one one-thousandth of a second to Idaho's Jemini Archer. No matter, Migani finished seventh overall in the prelims, giving him one of the final two qualifying positions for Saturday's final.
Â
The 100-meter record came after Migani had already opened the scoring for the Viking men with a fifth-place finish in the long jump. Migani placed fifth thanks to a personal-best jump of 23-10.25 (7.27m). He made the final with a mark of 22-11.25 (6.99m) through his opening three jumps, then increased it to 23-08.25 (7.22m) on his fourth attempt before setting his final mark on his fifth attempt.
Â
The personal best came by five and a half inches and was seven inches better than his previous best this season. Migani now ranks seventh all-time in the outdoor long jump at Portland State, not quite as cool as a school record like he got in the 100, but still pretty cool.
Â
The rest of the Vikings didn't find as much luck in the prelims as Migani Friday. The sprinters fared better than the distance runners given the altitude of Bozeman (~4,800 feet) as several still set personal bests despite not being able to advance out of the prelims.
Â
Eman Kargbo and
Ashley Peterson each set personal bests on either side of the men's and women's 200 and 400 meters, respectively.
Â
Kargbo cracked 50 seconds in the men's 400 meters for the first time in his career, finishing 19th overall in 49.91 seconds. He's the first Viking to crack 50 seconds in the event since Donté Robinson ran a decathlon 400 in 49.52 seconds at the Bryan Clay Invitational in 2019. Kargbo followed up with a 200-meter personal best of 22.33 seconds while finishing 24th overall in the prelims. Kargbo shaved more than half a second off his 200-meter personal best, which he set only two weeks earlier at the OSU High Performance Meet.
Â
Peterson, meanwhile, finished the women's 400 meters 16th overall in 58.56 seconds, setting a personal best by more than three-quarters of a second. It was only Peterson's second time cracking 60 seconds in the 400 meters, and her first time cracking 59 seconds. In the 200, she shaved close to four-tenths of a second off her personal best while finishing 18th overall in 26.41 seconds.
Â
In the middle distances,
Ahmeah Brown added another personal best for the Vikings while finishing 18th overall – one spot behind teammate
Laura Beghin – in 2:16.96. Brown's time represented an improvement of more than two and a half seconds over her previous best, which she set at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational on April 13.
Â
Beghin came closest of all the Viking middle distance runners to qualifying out of Friday's prelims. She narrowly missed being a time qualifier in the women's 1,500 meters, finishing two spots out of the final qualifying position while crossing the line in 4:39.82. Beghin passed Eastern Washington's Nattie Ruzauskas over the final lap to give her a chance at qualifying out of the opening heat, but seven runners went under her time in the second heat, including the final qualifier, Northern Arizona's Karrie Baloga in 4:35.85.
Â
Beghin wasn't quite as close in the 800, finishing 17th overall in 2:16.30. The final time qualifier in the 800 was Montana State's Annie Kaul, who finished in 2:12.75. Beghin's time still represented her second-best mark of the season in the 800 meters and would have been a new outdoor best if not for her time of 2:14.05 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Feb. 12.
Â
Beghin will still compete Saturday, as she's entered in the finals of the women's 5k at 1:45 p.m. PT / 2:45 p.m. MT. Her fellow middle distance runners will also return to the track as part of the Vikings' relay pool for the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay.
Â
The busiest Viking Saturday will undoubtedly be Migani, however, as he's scheduled for the men's triple jump at 9:10 a.m. PT / 10:10 a.m. MT, the finals of the 100 meters at 12 p.m. PT / 1 p.m. MT and the 4x4 at 2:20 p.m. PT / 3:20 p.m.
Â
The rest of the conference better hope his coldness doesn't bring more snow. Perhaps that's why he was so fast Friday. He was sliding around the track like Frozone.
