CORVALLIS, Ore. — The Portland State track & field closed out its April schedule with six personal bests and a number of second-best marks on the season Saturday at the OSU High Performance Meet.
Â
As he did Friday on the first day of the meet,
Dieumerci Migani led the way for the Vikings at Whyte Track & Field Center. Friday, it was a top 10 mark in the long jump that saw Migani highlight the Vikings' day. Saturday, Migani missed adding a second top 10 mark to his weekend accomplishments by only one one-hundredth of a second, finishing  the men's 100 meters in 10.85 seconds. Migani's time still represented the fastest 100-meter time by a Viking since Spenser Schmidt ran 10.59 at the 2016 Big Sky Outdoor Championships.
Â
GG Nitunga followed Migani in the 100, finishing in 11.23 seconds to match the personal best he set originally at the Electric Forest Collegiate Open on March 16.
Â
The Vikings got another two improvements from the women's 800 meters.
Ania Kapustka led a group of four Vikings in the event while winning her heat in a new collegiate best of 2:19.12. That was close to a second faster than Kapustka's previous best, which she set in her last meet for the Vikings at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational two weeks ago.
Â
Taylor Nichols gave the Vikings a second improvement in the 800 meters, as she set a seasonal best with her finish in 2:23.39. Nichols finished a second and a half ahead of her previous best this season, while her time put her within four-hundredths of a second of her personal best, which she set at the same meet last year.
Â
Ahmeah Brown and
Campbell Faust were unlucky not to join their teammates with personal bests of their own. Brown finished just one one-hundredth of a second off the time she set two weeks earlier while finishing in 2:19.55. Faust, meanwhile, finished in 2:26.52 – within four-hundredths of a second of her personal best, which she set at the Oregon Preview on March 23.
Â
Eman Kargbo posted the biggest personal best of the day, though it might not be a fair comparison. The last time Kargbo ran a 400-meter race, it was the team's outdoor opener at the Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker on March 2. A wintry mix of weather plus frigid temperatures met the Vikings that day. So, Kargbo's time of 54.36 seconds from that meet probably wasn't a fair assessment. Still, he hadn't had a chance to better that time until Saturday, when he finished more than two and a half seconds faster in 51.72 seconds.
Â
Kargbo returned to the track later in the day to run the opening leg of the Vikings' 4x400-meter relay.
Amir Ahmed,
Abdinajib Abade and Migani followed Kargbo, and the foursome posted a seasonal best of 3:31.23. That was six and a half seconds faster than the men's team's only previous 4x400-meter relay, which came two weeks earlier at the L&C Invite.
Â
All four Vikings competing in the men's 800 meters posted their No. 2 marks of the season. Ahmed led the pack, finishing in 1:56.29. Abade followed close behind in 1:56.54 while racing in a separate heat.
Tom Thake and
Lyness Ota then finished in 2:09.63 and 2:14.85, respectively.
Â
Noah Meucci and
Karch Kipp also posted each of their second-best marks of the season while competing in the men's shot put. Meucci posted a best throw of 42-08.00 (13.00m), trailing only his personal best of 43-03.75 (13.00m) that he set at the Electric Forest Collegiate Open on March 16. Kipp, meanwhile, posted a best throw of 40-10.50 (12.46m), just under a foot behind his personal best of 41-10.00 (12.75m).
Â
The Vikings' final No. 2 mark came in the women's 4x400-meter relay where they blew away the two other teams in their heat while finishing in 4:07.36.
Ashley Peterson, Brown, Kapustka and
Wendy Hare ran the relay for the Vikings, finishing more than seven seconds ahead of their closest competitor.
Â
Alison Calvin-Stupfel posted her No. 3 mark in the women's high jump for good measure. Calvin-Stupfel cleared on her second attempt at her opening height of 1.57 meters, then went over on her first attempt at 5-03.75 (1.62m). She took three attempts at what would have been a personal best of 5-05.75 (1.67m), but missed on all three attempts.
Â
The Vikings will now turn the page to May, starting with a three-meet weekend between May 3-4. Part of the team will compete at the Oregon Twilight in Eugene on May 3, while the rest of the squad splits their time between the Portland Twilight and Oxy Invite on May 4.
Â
After that, comes the postseason and the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, May 8-11, in Bozeman, Mont.
