PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State track & field team may not have been responsible for the ice finally melting off Portland-area streets Sunday. But any ice carried into the University of Portland's Chiles Center certainly melted in a second as the Vikings produced three all-time top 10 marks while competing at the Portland Indoor One.
Â
The three top 10 marks follow five set a week ago at the UW Indoor Preview.
Laura Beghin set the No. 4 time in the women's 1,000 meters Sunday, while
Dieumerci Migani and
Addison Capozzi set the No. 7 and 9 times in the men's 300 and women's 600 meters, respectively.
Â
Out of those three, Migani was the only one to also set an all-time mark last week at the UW Indoor Preview. A week ago, Migani moved into a tie for eighth all time in the men's indoor long jump. Sunday, he competed in the extremely rare 300 meters, where he led a group of 12 Vikings while placing second overall in a time of 36.77 seconds.
Â
The men's 300 meters is so rare that none of the 12 Vikings racing in the event Sunday had a previous personal best in the event. In another sign of how rare the 300 meters is, Migani's time of 36.77 seconds makes him the first Viking to enter the all-time top 10 since Brandon Sears and Nick Trubachik in 2008. Â
Â
The rarity of events was a common theme across Sunday's meet as the Vikings competed primarily in the men's and women's 300, 600 and 1,000 meters.
Â
Beghin entering the top 10 in the women's 1k was nearly as rare a feat as Migani's all-time mark in the 300. It's a difference of only three years. Instead of being the first new entry since 2008 like Migani, Beghin is the first new entry since Quiana Jackson in 2011. Beghin's time of 3:00.28 slotted her just ahead of Amber Rozcicha, who ran a time of 3:03.15 in 2010.
Â
Beghin has now posted two strong times in the middle distances so far this season. A week ago, she won her section of the women's 800 meters in a new personal best of 2:19.08. Sunday, she placed second overall in the 1k.
Â
Capozzi added the Vikings' third top 10 mark Sunday while placing fourth overall in the women's 600 meters in 1:45.68. Capozzi's time dipped her just under teammate
Ania Kapustka's time of 1:45.93 last week, which had been the No. 9 mark when she set it at the UW Indoor Preview. Kapustka ran the 1k Sunday, placing third behind Beghin in 3:22.58.
Â
Amir Ahmed would have set a top 10 mark on the men's side of the 600 meters if not for his time of 1:24.08 last week. Ahmed followed up with a time of 1:24.65 Sunday, placing him second overall.
Â
Other high finishers for the Vikings Sunday included
Makena Speer and
Ashley Peterson who placed third and fourth, respectively, in the women's 300 meters. Speer and Peterson led a group of eight Viking women – most of them also soccer players at Portland State, like Speer – in times of 44.00 and 44.04 seconds, respectively. Speer and Peterson also joined fellow women's soccer players
Liv Frazier and
Elle Frazier on a 4x400-meter relay for the Vikings that placed second in 4:18.84.
Â
Edward Niyongere and
Eman Kargbo also joined Migani in the top five of the men's 300 meters, finishing in 38.16 and 38.54 seconds, respectively.
Â
Two more top-five finishers for the Vikings came in the men's 1,000 meters, where
Abdinajib Abade and
Zach Grams finished fourth and fifth in times of 2:41.93 and 2:45.05.
Â
The Vikings had been scheduled to also compete at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open in Moscow, Idaho, this weekend, but were forced to cancel due to the winter weather. With road conditions improving Sunday, the Vikings will venture outside of Portland next week for the UW Invitational, Jan. 26-27, in Seattle, Wash.
