PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State volleyball program, home of the last three Big Sky Conference Top Newcomers, added to its transfer class Tuesday with the addition of Carisa Barron from CSUN.
 
Barron follows the same path as former teammate Lauryn Anderson, who also transferred to Portland State from CSUN. Anderson represents the latest Viking to be named Big Sky Top Newcomer as she earned the award this past fall after Madison Friebel in 2022 and Makayla Lewis in 2021.
 
Barron, for her part, was a two-time All-Big West honorable mention as a sophomore and junior at CSUN. Barron earned the honors after leading the Big West Conference in triples-doubles both as a sophomore, when she recorded six triple-doubles, and as a junior when she had four.
 
"Carisa possesses all the skills and traits of a setter/hitter," Portland State head coach Michael Seemann said of Barron. "She is a proven athlete who understands how to run an offense and who can score as an attacker. She is motivated to win, and we believe she can help this program do just that."
 
Barron, a setter and right-side hitter, led CSUN with 535 assists (4.73 per set) last season, while also ranking third on the team in kills (250) and fourth in digs (224). Barrow posted similar numbers as a sophomore, when she led the Matadors in assists (5.07 per set) while ranking third on the team in kills (253, 2.6 per set).
 
Barron's first collegiate triple-double came against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 16, 2022, when she recorded 27 assists, 18 digs and 10 kills. Another one came against UC Riverside on Oct. 15, 2022, when she recorded a career-high 19 kills on .474 hitting to go with 22 assists and 10 digs.
 
Barron's first triple-double of the 2023 season came against Fresno State on Sept. 1, when she had 13 kills, 21 assists and 12 digs. She set a season high with 16 kills on .333 hitting while recording another triple-double with 17 assists and 12 digs against CSU Bakersfield on Sept. 19, 2023.
 
Barron joins a list of newcomers that includes three high school signees that the Vikings inked in November. The high school class includes libero/defensive specialist Cali-Jo Shigemasa, setter Allison Panter, and middle blocker Reese Biesesemeyer.
