RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Thanks to three second-half goals, the Portland State women's soccer team earned its second win of the year on Friday night, defeating UC Riverside 3-1 at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
The Vikings improved to 2-5-0 on the year while the Highlanders dropped to 0-5-4.
The teams combined for four goals in the contest, all of which came in the second period. Abi Hoffman was the first to find the net, doing so unassisted in the 54th minute to put PSU ahead 1-0.
UCR found the equalizer less than ten minutes later, pushing one past Viking goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham to tie things at one.
As the match came down to the wire, it was Raniyah Burton who broke the tie for PSU. Burton scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute off an assist from Elle Frazier. Less than two minutes later, she struck again in the 85th minute after a feed from CeCe Jenkins. The Vikings' defense held the Highlanders scoreless in the final minutes to secure the victory.
Portland State tallied 19 shots in the contest while holding the Highlanders to just six attempts. Both Hoffman and Lucy Quinn tallied a team-high four shots each. Cunningham played all 90 minutes in goal, recording three saves in the win.
The Vikings will close out non-conference action on Sunday, Sept. 17 at CSUN. The match is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Northridge.
