AZUSA, Calif. — 27 outs without allowing a base runner comprises a perfect game in baseball. What should comprise a perfect day in track & field? Surely, a team that sees all of its athletes set personal bests should have a claim to a perfect day.
Â
Portland State staked such a claim for itself Friday, as all four Vikings in competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational set personal bests. All four personal bests came by wide margins, too. The smallest PB of the day –
Cam McChesney at 14:36.92 in the men's 5k – was still close to a 19-second improvement.
Â
The largest personal best of the day also went to the Vikings' lone heat winner Friday. That was
Dom Morganti, who won his section of the men's 10k by close to three seconds. Morganti's winning time of 30:01.99 put him agonizing close to becoming just the fourth Viking to go sub-30 in the 10k, but it still represented close to a 90-second improvement over his previous best outdoors.
Â
Morganti also moved up to fourth all time in the 10k. Only school record holder Alex Cisneros (29:25.74) has run a faster 10k time than Morganti in the past 39 years at Portland State.
Â
Jamie Zamrin followed suit with a top 10 mark in the women's 10k. Zamrin moved up to seventh all time in the event while shaving just under 40 seconds off her previous best with her finish in 35:16.58.
Â
McChesney came next on the track with his personal best of 14:36.92 in the men's 5k. McChesney only cracked 15 minutes in the 5k for the first time less than two weeks ago at the Pacific Open, but lowered his time again Friday.
Â
The chance for the perfect day then came down to
Abi Swain, who was the lone Viking competing in the evening Friday. Swain came through, completing the perfect day with a 20-second personal best with her time of 17:20.32 in the women's 5k.
Â
The Vikings can go for more personal bests Saturday, as they conclude the Bryan Clay Invitational with a series of 1,500-meter races.

CLACKAMAS, Ore. — In four weeks competing outdoors as a Viking,
Gabrielle Bartlett has already broken the school record in the women's pole vault twice.
Â
If you will, she's raised the bar…tlett in the event.
Â
Friday, Bartlett broke her own school record in the pole vault thanks to a clutch third-attempt clearance at 3.45 meters. Bartlett followed that with a first-attempt clearance at 3.60 meters (11-09.75), which now stands as her new school record at Portland State.
Â
Bartlett bettered the school record she initially set at 11-03.75 (3.45m) at the Oregon Preview on March 18. She hadn't approached that height in two meets since then, but returned to form Friday with her second school record of the season.
Â
Ahliah Nordstrom also competed in the hammer Friday, finishing with a best throw of 124-01 (37.84m). That's only 27 inches off her seasonal best, which she set at the same facility at the L&C Spring Break Open on March 17.
