THE OPENING TIP
"It's a new season."
    Â
Those were the words of Portland State Head Coach
Jase Coburn following the Vikings' last-second loss to Sacramento State on Monday night. And despite that loss, he said it with a smile on his face.
    Â
Coburn knows what can happen during the madness of March when you enter a conference post-season tournament, or "a new season." Last year, his first as the Vikings Head Coach, PSU entered the Big Sky Tournament as the number-seven seed. They proceeded to beat 10th-seed Idaho State in the first round, then knock off number-two seed Southern Utah in the quarterfinals. In the Big Sky semifinals, the Vikings had a second-half lead against number-three seed Northern Colorado before finally succumbing, 86-79.
    Â
So, a lot can happen in March.
    Â
Portland State (12-18, 6-11) finds itself entering the Big Sky Tournament as the number-seven seed once again. The format of the slimmed-down 10-team tournament is slightly different, but the Vikings will open up on Saturday in a first-round game against none other than eighth-seeded Northern Colorado (11-19, 6-12). The teams tip off in an 8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT game at Idaho Central Arena in Boise. The winner gets the right to play number-two seed and defending champion Montana State (22-9, 15-3) in a quarterfinal game on Sunday.Â
    Â
The Big Sky Conference Tournament runs through Wednesday, March 8, when the champion will be crowned and a ticket will be punched to the NCAA Tournament.
    Â
Portland State goes into the Big Sky Tourney having lost three games in a row. The Vikings have had reasonable success away from home this year though, going 5-9 in road games and 1-2 in neutral site games. They take on a Bears team that, despite being just behind them in the standings, beat them in their two league meetings, 69-67 in Portland and 88-79 in Greeley.
    Â
The Vikings bring to the tournament a team led by SR G
Cameron Parker, a native of Portland. Parker averages 18.0 points and 6.1 assists per game. He has a brilliant shooting slash line of .527/.435/.827 and has tied the school record for free throws made in a season (191). Parker has led the Big Sky in assists for the third straight season.
    Â
PSU features an active defense that has forced 16 turnovers a game while making a league-leading 7.1 steals per game. PSU also leads the Big Sky in bench points (28.2), fast break points (14.8) and blocked shots (3.3).
    Â
Northern Colorado features the Big Sky Conference's leading scorer in forward Dalton Knecht (20.1). He averaged 21.6 in conference games while Parker was second at 20.4 per game.
    Â
The Bears (77.2) and the Vikings (75.2) allow the most points in the Big Sky Conference, so Saturday's matchup should be a high-scoring affair.
    Â
Portland State is 1-1 all-time against Northern Colorado in the Big Sky Conference Tournament. The Vikings won 74-67 in a first-round game played in Reno on Mar. 8, 2016. The Bears won last year's semifinal matchup, 86-79, in Boise.
    Â
PSU is making its 20th appearance in the Big Sky Conference Tournament and is 14-16 all-time. The Vikings won tournament titles in 2008 and 2009.

GAME NOTES: PORTLAND STATE vs. NORTHERN COLORADO
- THE SERIES: Portland State leads the all-time series, 23-15, and the Big Sky Conference series, 19-15... Northern Colorado swept the regular season series this year. Last season, PSU swept the regular season series last year, but lost to the Bears in the Big Sky Tournament semifinal.
- Jan. 14, 2023 at Viking Pavilion, UNC 69, PSU 67: Northern Colorado hung on to beat the Vikings at the wire, 69-67. The Vikings were down four points with 14 ticks remaining on the clock. UNC star Dalton Knecht had just swished a pair of free throws to cap his 31-point night and the Vikings were desperate. Cameron Parker took the ensuing inbound pass, raced the length of the court, got into the lane and hit a tough driving layin. That trimmed the score to 69-67 with 9.3 seconds left. Plenty of time for another miracle, right? Following a quick timeout Portland State immediately got the break it needed. The Vikings' dogged press caused the Bears' Daylen Kountz to step on the end line after catching the inbound pass. Suddenly, it was Viking basketball with 7.7 seconds left under their own basket. PSU inbounded and found Jorell Saterfield in the corner. He let fly with a tying 20-foot jumper. The ball rimmed out, but was rebounded by Hunter Woods, who quickly tossed it back at the rim. The ball fell away and the Vikings were denied a chance at an improbable win... PSU was ahead 58-44 with 8:52 left to play when the Bears leapt into action. UNC went on a 13-point run - the last 11 of which came from Knecht - and it was game on with five minutes to play... Parker led Portland State with 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Bobby Harvey came off the bench to hit five of six field goals, including three three-pointers for 13 points... Knecht was the star of the show with 31 points on 11-21 from the field, 6-13 from distance and 3-3 at the line. He also led the Bears with six rebounds... Portland State's bench scored 35 of the Vikings' 67 points, combining to make 15-22 shots from the field (.682). Feb. 9, 2023 at Greeley, UNC 88, PSU 79: Cameron Parker put up a career-high 32 points on a remarkable shooting performance, making 10-12 from the field, including all three three-point attempts and 9-12 at the free throw line. But it wasn't enough for the Vikings to pick up a road win... PSU couldn't stop the Bears as they ran up 88 points on 35-60 (.583) shooting from the field. Northern Colorado was particularly effective getting to the basket scoring 56 points inside. Northern Colorado never led by more than 11 points but also never trailed in the game... Portland State pulled within three points on three occasions down the stretch, but could never get closer. Trailing 82-79 with 1:47 left, the Vikings had five empty possessions to close out the game... Daylen Kountz scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Bears. Dalton Knecht, the Big Sky's leading scorer had 20 points and seven rebounds.Matt Johnson scored 16 points.
- COACHES: Vikings Coach Jase Coburn (Arizona State, 2006) is in his second season as Head Coach and has a 25-36 record overall. He is 2-3 against Northern Colorado. Coburn is 2-1 in Big Sky Tournament games, 0-1 against the Bears. Coburn spent eight previous seasons on the Park Blocks as an Assistant and Associate Head Coach... the Bears are coached by Steve Smiley in his third season. He has a 42-45 career record, including 4-3 against the Vikings.
Â

Â
BIG SKY PLAY NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART
For a testament to how closely-contested games are in the Big Sky Conference look no further than Portland State. The Vikings held second-half leads in 13 of the 17 games. Of those 13 games, PSU is 6-7. Among the 11 games decided by single-digits, PSU is 5-6, including 3-2 in games decided by three or less... for the season, the Vikings are 5-3 in games decided by four points or less. Last Monday's game with Sacramento State featured 16 ties, 13 lead changes and a largest lead of just six points (PSU).
Â
GRAND LARCENY
Remarkably, Portland State has led the Big Sky Conference in team steals per game for eight straight seasons. Thievery on the basketball court has been prevalent during the Barret Peery, Tyler Geving and
Jase Coburn coaching eras. In addition, PSU has had two individual steals leaders. A look:
Â
Season, steals per game
2015-16: 8.5
2016-17: 9.9, individual: Calaen Robinson, 2.35
2017-18: 9.8
2018-19: 8.3
2019-20: 8.7, individual: Holland Woods, 2.06
2020-21: 8.2
2021-22: 9.3
2022-23: 7.1
Â
1,000-800... THERE IS ONLY ONE!... FOR NOW
SR G
Cameron Parker passed 1,000 career points earlier this season then passed 700 career assists at Sacramento State on Dec. 31. Parker currently has 1,396 career points and 803 career assists in 137 career games. He is currently the only active player with 1,000 career points and 800 career assists... though he should have company soon.
- Parker currently ranks 34th on the NCAA's all-time assist list... Jalen Pickett of Penn State has 2,088 points and 796 assists (36th) in 136 career games while Marcus Carr of Texas has 2,234 points and 710 assists in 155 games... Yuri Collins of Saint Louis has career totals of 960 points and 840 assists in 112 games. He is the active NCAA assist leader (23rd all-time).
- Parker is currently number two in the NCAA among active assist leaders behind Collins.
- Parker is currently 16th in assists in Big Sky Conference history (449 in 88 games).
- Parker's 172 assists this season ranks sixth in PSU history (Will Funn, 224 in 2004-05, NCAA leader).
Â
GAME WINNERS
Portland State seems to have cornered the market on thrilling endings to games this season, winning three times on shots in the final seconds, two of which went through the net after the buzzer sounded. Here is a summary:
- FOUR BOUNCES, A BUCKET, AND A FAMILIAR STORY: When JR G Jorell Saterfield tossed up a soft running jumper in the lane at California Baptist (12/22) it bounced on the rim four times before settling through the net. That bucket gave the Vikings a 73-72 lead with 8.2 seconds to play. It was the seventh and final lead change in the last 3:40 of the game as PSU won 74-72. That basket also marked the first game-winner in the final 10 seconds of a game by a Viking since Jan. 11, 2020. On a remarkably similar play and game, Holland "Boo Boo" Woods hit a runner in the lane with 2.4 seconds to play at Montana State for a 77-76 win. That game, also on the road, saw the lead change hands eight times in the last 3:25 of the contest.
- WOODS DELIVERS (TWICE) IN THE LAST 10 SECONDS: A lot of things had to go right for the Vikings to pull off a come-from-behind 75-74 victory over Northern Arizona (1/12), and somehow they did. PSU led by 17 points in the first half, but ceded the lead to the Lumberjacks shortly after halftime and trailed almost the entire second half before the heroics of JR F Hunter Woods... NAU's Oakland Fort swished a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left and the Lumberjacks led, 73-67... SR G Cameron Parker raced back up court with the ball, got to the rim and scored to make it 73-69 with 19 seconds left... PSU then fouled NAU's Nik Mains who made one of two free throws with 17.8 seconds remaining... Again, the Vikings pushed the ball up court, Parker came off a Woods' screen at the top of the arc and pitched it back to Woods on the wing. He swished the three-pointer with 9.8 seconds to play. PSU now trailed only 74-72... Mains was fouled again, went to the line and missed both free throws with 8.4 seconds on the clock. However, Carson Towt grabbed the offensive rebound for the 'Jacks. He was fouled and NAU had two more free throws with 7.1 seconds to go. Then, Towt missed both free throws... Woods rebounded, quickly passed to Parker and it was a footrace to the other end. Parker went left and Woods went right. When pressure got to Parker just before the three-point line he winged a pass cross court to Woods directly in front of the PSU bench. Woods let fly just before the buzzer sounded and ripped the net for an improbable 75-74 win.
- THE SHOT THAT SET THE SPORTS WORLD ON ITS EAR (AT LEAST FOR A DAY): The Vikings won it. They lost it. Then, they won it again. In what may be the craziest finish of the college basketball season, Portland State stunned Northern Arizona at the buzzer, 88-87 (2/11)… again... The Vikings appeared to have the game in the bag, leading 86-78 with just 1:22 remaining at JL Walkup Skydome. But NAU had other ideas... PSU turned the ball over twice and missed three free throws on their next four possessions as the Lumberjacks scored six points in a row, closing to 86-84 with 5.9 seconds to play. JR F Hunter Woods was at the line for the Vikings, but missed and the 'Jacks rebounded... NAU's Liam Lloyd raced up the court and rose up for a three-pointer from just in front of the Lumberjacks' bench. He splashed the three, giving NAU an 87-86 victory... The Vikings had lost... Or had they? Officials looked at the replay monitor and determined that 0.4 seconds remained in the game after the ball went through the hoop... Desperation was all that was left for PSU. Following a timeout, Woods took the ball out of bounds, heaving a high-arcing pass to the opposite end of the floor. SO F Isaiah Johnson leaped in the air between two NAU defenders, caught the pass, and in the same motion tossed up a fall away shot off the glass from 12 feet out on the right side of the key. Buzzer, glass, swish... 88-87, Vikings. Game over... the game-winning shot dominated the sports media news cycle and was picked as ESPN SportsCenter No. 1 Play of the Day.
