Sophia Meyers Named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week after Sweep of Montana Schools

FARMINGTON, Utah — Leading the Portland State volleyball team to a weekend sweep of the Montana schools has earned junior Sophia Meyers her second Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season.

Meyers picked up the award Monday after a pair of dramatic wins over Montana State, 3-2, last Thursday, and Montana, 3-1, last Saturday.

Against Montana State Thursday, Meyers and the Vikings completed a reverse sweep over a Bobcat team that came into the weekend tied atop the Big Sky standings. The Vikings saved four match points in the fourth set against the Bobcats, with Meyers recording kills on three of those four points.

Meyers recorded 12 of her match-high 21 kills after the first two sets against the Bobcats while hitting .440 over the final three frames. The increased efficiency matched the Vikings' improvement as a team over the second half of the match. After hitting just .104 over the first two sets, the Vikings hit .245 over the final three. Seven of Meyers' 21 kills came in the fourth set, including kills to erase match points at 25-24, 27-26 and 28-27. Additionally, Meyers added 20 digs to her 21 kills against the Bobcats, giving her the first 20-20 match of her career.

The win over the Bobcats was the first time the Vikings had completed a reverse sweep since a five-set win over Eastern Washington on Sept. 24 last season. It was also the first time the Vikings had won after facing match point earlier in the match since that win over the Eagles.

Meyers and the Vikings continued that steady play late in sets against Montana Saturday. The Vikings faced two set points in the third set, either of which would have given the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead in the match. The Vikings saved both, however, before winning 27-25, and then cruised in the fourth set.

Meyers posted another match high with 17 kills on .259 hitting against the Grizzlies to go with 12 digs and five aces. The double-double was the fourth straight for Meyers and her 13th of the season. She needs only one more to enter the career top 10 at Portland State.

Meyers' play helped the Vikings hit .288 as a team, their best mark since they hit a season-high .328 against defending Big Sky champion Northern Colorado on Sept. 23.

Overall, Meyers averaged 4.22 kills per set on .292 hitting to go with 3.56 digs and 5.39 points per set between both matches. Additionally, her nine aces combined against the Bobcats and Grizzlies meant she averaged 1.00 aces per set. The big weekend means Meyers now leads the Big Sky with 0.51 aces per set while ranking second in kills (3.65) and points (4.38) per set.

Meyers and the Vikings will hope to continue their momentum on the road this weekend, as they face Northern Arizona Thursday and Northern Colorado Saturday. First serve for the match at NAU Thursday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
