MISSOULA, Mont. - The Portland State women's soccer team battled the Big Sky regular season champion Montana Grizzlies Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 to close out the regular season.
At 7-7-2 overall and a 4-2-2 conference record this season, the Vikings will head into next week's conference tournament as the No. 3 seed. The 7-7-2 mark is the Vikings' best record since 2014. The Grizzlies finished the regular season on a seven-game win streak, compiling a 13-2-3 (7-0-1 BSC) record. They'll enter next week's tournament as the No. 1 seed.
Sunday's match was scoreless through 45 minutes, despite the teams combining for 13 shots. The Griz had nine shot attempts and five corner kicks in the first half but were unable to get one past Viking starting goalkeeper Eden Millan.
Montana scored the lone goal of the game shortly after halftime, netting the game-winner in the 51st minute to take the lead.
As the Vikings tried to find some late-game magic, Ocean Rideout fired off two shots in the final ten minutes but neither found the back of the net. Montana held on in the final minutes to secure the victory.
Fifth-year midfielder Sienna Higinbotham notched a career-high six shots (four on goal) in the loss. The Vikings finished with 15 shots to Montana's 17. Millan recorded four saves in goal for Portland State.
The Vikings will open the Big Sky Tournament next week on Wednesday, Nov. 1 against No. 6 seed Idaho State in Flagstaff, Ariz.
