RESULTS
SEATTLE, Wash. — Let's do some math.
Â
Four runners make up a women's distance medley relay team.
Â
It had been four years since the Portland State track & field team ran a women's DMR.
Â
It had been 16 years since the school record had been set in the event.
Â
4 x 4 = 16
Â
It was fate, then, as
Tatum Miller,
Wendy Hare,
Bára Stýblová and
Alex Barbour – the Vikings' first women's DMR team since 2019 – broke a school record that had stood since 2007 with their time of 11:36.53 Friday at the UW Invitational.
Â
The four of them smashed the old record by 18 seconds despite never having run a relay before Friday. Miller took out the baton first in the opening 1,200-meter leg, while Hare followed in the 400, Stýblová in the 800 and Barbour in the anchor 1,600-meter leg.
Â
Their time of 11:36.53 not only set the Portland State school record, it also moved the four of them up to eighth all time within Big Sky Conference history. They're the first team other than Northern Arizona to enter the conference's top 10 since 2011.
Â
The Vikings also got two other top 10 marks earlier in the day at Dempsey Indoor Facility.
Evan Peters and
Ben Vanderbosch both moved into the all-time top 10 within the men's 5k Friday.
Â
Peters, who ran amongst the leaders early in the race before finishing in 14:48.44, moved up to third all time in the indoor 5k at Portland State. Peters trails only teammate
Keynan Abdi and Alex Cisneros, who rank 1-2 in the 5k at 14:17.70 and 14:19.95, respectively. Abdi nearly broke Cisneros' record at last season's UW Invite, before breaking the record two weeks later at the 2022 Husky Classic.
Â
Vanderbosch, meanwhile, started at a more deliberate pace than Peters and finished in 15:00.26. That moves him up to sixth all time in the indoor 5k at Portland State.
Â
The Vikings continue at the UW Invitational tomorrow. Barbour, Miller and Stýblová are all scheduled to double back in the women's mile at 12 p.m. following their record-breaking performance Friday.
Jalen Marcil,
Jamie Zamrin and
Abi Swain will open the day for the Vikings in the women's 3k at 9 a.m.
Â
It'll be tough to beat Friday's record in the DMR. But as long as the math adds up, don't count it out.
