POCATELLO, Idaho — Harley Montgomery entered unknown territory Wednesday at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Competing on the first day of his first-ever decathlon, Montgomery bettered two personal bests and one seasonal best to move into 12th place with 3,029 points entering the second day of the competition.
Montgomery opened with his two personal bests of the day. He shaved a tenth of a second off his 100-meter personal best while placing fifth overall, as he finished in 11.25 seconds. The personal best gave Montgomery 806 points, his most in any event on the first day of the decathlon. Montgomery then followed with a huge personal best in the long jump, bettering his previous best by nearly two feet with a mark of 20-01.00 (6.12m) on his final attempt of the day.
Montgomery lost some ground in the shot put and high jump, finishing with marks of 30-03.00 (9.22m) and 4-10.25 (1.48m), respectively. He made it up in the closing 400 meters, however, winning his section of the 400 meters and placing third overall in a time of 50.39 seconds. The 400-meter time marked a seasonal best by a quarter of a second, and nearly gave him his second 800-point event of the day as he scored 797 points to jump three places in the decathlon standings.
The decathlon will continue at 9 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. MT tomorrow with the 110-meter hurdles. All other events at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, besides the heptathlon and decathlon, will begin Friday.
