HILLSBORO, Ore. - The Portland State softball team piled on fourteen runs this afternoon against Southern Utah, clinching its third Big Sky series of the season with a 10-1 run-rule victory in the opener followed by a 4-1 win in game two.
The Vikings improved to 23-14 and 7-4 in conference action, while Southern Utah fell to 3-31 and 0-11 in Big Sky play.Â
Logan Riggenbach was dominant at the plate in the opening game, finishing just one base hit short of the cycle. The sophomore began her afternoon with a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the first to give the Vikings their first lead of the day. After a Thunderbird error led to another run in the second, Riggenbach capped off the frame with an RBI double down the left-field line to grab a 4-0 lead.
The Vikings blew things open in the third, scoring on back-to-back base hits from
Olivia Dean and
Emily Johansen to extend the lead to five. Riggenbach came through once again for PSU with the bases juiced, crushing a grand slam over the right-field fence to make it 10-0.
The Thunderbirds managed to add one run in the fourth before being shut down in the top of the fifth.Â
After holding SUU hitless through three innings of work,
Olivia Grey earned the win in the circle, improving to 14-5 on the season. Riggenbach finished the contest with a career-high seven RBIs, going 3-for-4 at the plate.Â
Allicitie Frost started game two for Portland State and was outstanding throughout, holding SUU to just two hits in a complete-game performance.Â
Johansen struck early, sending a two-run shot to right field to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. McCrea followed three innings later, knocking the first home run of her collegiate career to extend the lead to four.Â
SUU found their lone run in the fifth following a throwing error by Portland State. Frost held her ground for the next two innings, securing the Vikings' second win of the day.Â
Dean led the offense with a pair of hits, while four others recorded one.Â
The Vikings will look to complete the series sweep over SUU on Saturday at Gordon Faber Field 4. First pitch has been moved up to 9 a.m.
