Portland State plays a final tournament of desert golf prior to the Big Sky Championship when it takes part in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic next week in Maricopa, AZ.
Ak Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club, site of the Cowgirl Classic, is just 40 miles from Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, site of the Big Sky Championship on Apr. 18-20. It should play similarly and will feature similar opponents. Eight Big Sky Conference schools are among the 22 competing in the Cowgirl Classic when it tees up on Monday morning.
The Vikings hope to continue their spring improvement at the Cowgirl Classic. In 12 scoring rounds last fall, PSU had a team scoring average of 312.3. In six scoring rounds so far this spring, the Vikings have a 307.6 scoring average.
In addition, all four returning letterwinners on the Portland State team have seen an improved scoring average over their previous season.
Sophomore
Katie Harris is 2.10 strokes per round better than last season. Sophomore
Mariana Garcia Rosette has cut 2.80 strokes per round over last season. Senior
McKenna Maser has seen a 6.17 stroke per round improvement. Senior
Windy Huang is 0.86 strokes per round better than 2019-20 (she was a redshirt last season). Joining those four in the starting lineup next week is freshman
Mari Nakamura.
PSU placed 14th among 20 teams at last year's Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, and 15th among 20 teams in 2020.
