PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State volleyball team picked up an intra-conference transfer Thursday as Ashlyn Blotzer, a two-time All-Big Sky second-team selection while at Eastern Washington, has joined the Vikings.
Blotzer, a 6-0 middle blocker, steps into what should be a solid group for the Vikings at the net next season.
Ashleigh Barto, one of the Vikings' two starting middles last season, enters her junior season in 2022 after averaging 0.96 blocks per set as a sophomore, while
Sydney Rabe and
Morgan Halady enter their second years on the Park Blocks.
"Ashlyn is the offensive punch that will contribute to a more balanced attack moving into fall of 2022," Portland State head volleyball coach
Michael Seemann said of Blotzer. "She can score. Specifically, she is very potent and efficient off of one foot. That'll give us opportunities to get offensive production out of the middle."
"She is a league veteran, with a proven track record of success. She knows what it takes day in and day out to win in the Big Sky Conference, and she is highly motivated to work for a title in her final year in the Conference."
Blotzer averaged 2.20 kills per set and 0.69 blocks per set during the 2021 winter season when she helped lead the Eagles to their first Big Sky tournament appearance since 2016. Blotzer earned her first All-Big Sky second-team honor that season, and picked up her second this past fall when she averaged 2.00 kills and 0.67 blocks per set.
Blotzer also led the Eagles in kills and blocks during her first year at Eastern Washington in 2019. She played her freshman season at UC Riverside in 2018, and has a year of eligibility remaining thanks to the NCAA granting all players who competed during the 2020-21 COVID year an extra year.
