HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland State softball team earned two shutout victories over Corban on Wednesday, 6-0 and 3-0, at Gordon Faber Field 4.
The Vikings improved to 15-10 on the season while the Warriors fell to 11-16.
After a series of walks, Portland State scored four runs in the opening inning of game one to take a 4-0 lead.Â
Despite the Vikings' early advantage, the Warriors were the first to record a hit, doing so in the top of the fourth inning, but failed to capitalize.
Natalia Martinez added to Portland State's lead in the fifth, knocking an RBI single to left field to score
Emily Johansen. A solo home run from
Paetynn Lopez in the bottom of the sixth stretched the Viking's lead to 6-0.Â
Marisol Gaona shut down the Warriors in the seventh to clinch the shutout win for Portland State, its fourth of the season.
Olivia Grey pitched the opening five innings for the Vikings, earning the win as she improved to 11-1 on the year.
Annie Lemos got the start in game two, tossing six shutout innings before
Allicitie Frost took things over in the sixth. A Corban error and an RBI single from Lopez gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. PSU capitalized on another warrior error in the fourth, extending its lead to 3-0.Â
Frost retired the side in the top of the seventh, sealing the Viking's second consecutive shutout.
Emily Johansen led the offense with three hits on the day while Lemos picked up the first win of her collegiate career in the circle.
Portland State will play a single game at Warner Pacific next Wednesday (March 23) at 1 p.m. before beginning Big Sky play at Montana (March 26-27).
