Vikings Split Doubleheader With No. 24 Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Portland State softball team ended No. 24/23 Oregon State's seventeen-game winning streak on Saturday, claiming a 6-1 victory in game one before dropping game two 9-1 in six innings.

The win marked Portland State's first over a ranked opponent since 2011. The Vikings moved to 13-9 overall while the Beavers dropped to 21-4.

PSU took  an early lead in game one when back-to-back RBIs from Paetynn Lopez and Emily Johansen put them on top 2-0. Alexa Cepeda extended the lead later in the inning with a two-out two-RBI double to right-center, scoring Johansen and Logan Riggenbach.

The Beavers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the second to cut the Viking's lead to 4-1.

Oregon State held the Vikings scoreless until the top of the fifth when they added to their lead with a pair of RBIs from Johansen and Riggenbach.

In the final two innings, Olivia Grey shut down the Beavers to secure Portland State's second victory over a Pac-12 opponent this season. Grey improved to 10-1 in the circle, tossing her ninth complete game while striking out five.

The pitchers dominated the majority of game two. Annie Lemos got the start in the circle for the Vikings, holding the Beavers scoreless through five frames. An Oregon State error led to a 1-0 Viking lead in the top of the sixth. The Beavers finally broke through in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring nine runs on seven hits to end it at 9-1.

Portland State tallied five hits in the contest, two of those coming from Shea Garcia. Lemos took the loss in the circle, falling to 0-4 on the year.

The Vikings will return to action tomorrow morning against North Dakota State at 11 a.m. at Kelly Field.
