EUGENE, Ore. - Olivia Grey's nine-inning shutout led the Portland State softball team to a 2-0 victory over North Dakota State in the opener of the UO/OSU Invitational on Friday before they fell to eleventh-ranked Oregon in the nightcap, 7-0.
The Vikings are now 12-8 on the season. The Bison fell to 12-9 while the Ducks jumped to 17-3.
Grey continued her dominant 2022 campaign on the rubber as she lit up the stat sheet in game one. Earning her third shutout win in her eighth complete-game performance, Grey fanned a career-high fifteen batters and gave up zero walks to the Bison.Â
Both pitchers were indestructible in the circle, shutting down the offenses in seven consecutive innings.Â
It wasn't until the bottom of the eighth that the Bison posed a threat. With one out and a runner on third, NDSU attempted a game-winning squeeze bunt but a clutch scoop and flip from third baseman
Natalia Martinez shut them down.
Riding the momentum into the top of the ninth, the Vikings scored the first run of the day off a Bison error to go up 1-0. Two plays later,
Emily Johansen laid down a bunt to score
Olivia Dean and extend the lead to two.Â
NDSU set themselves up nicely in the bottom half of the inning, moving two runners into scoring position. With the tying run on second base, Grey buckled down, retiring three-straight batters to seal the deal for Portland State.Â
The Vikings played errorless defense through nine innings while the offense tallied four hits.Â
The eleventh-ranked Ducks awaited the Vikings in game two. Facing PSU's
Allicitie Frost, the offense came out swinging, putting up six runs in the opening two innings.
Marisol Gaona took over in the bottom of the third, holding the Ducks scoreless until they extended the lead to 7-0 in the fourth. Gaona tossed a pair of shutout innings to close out the day but the Portland State offense failed to get a run across.Â
The Vikings finished the game with four hits against Oregon's Jordan Dail and Makenna Kliethermes.
Maddie Thompson led with a team-high two hits. Gaona had her best outing of the season, limiting the Ducks to just one earned run and four hits over four frames.Â
Portland State will travel to Corvallis for a doubleheader against Oregon State tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.Â
