New Portland State Men's Basketball Coach
Jase Coburn has announced the signing of his first student-athlete since taking over the Viking program on April 16. Coburn has signed transfer guard Damion Squire to an aid agreement for 2021-22.
Â
Squire has spent three years at UC Davis, and started 51 of his 68 career games. This past season in 14 games, he averaged 11.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals. Squire shot .475 from the field, .382 from three-point range and .844 at the line. He ranked 22
nd in the Big West Conference in scoring and fifth in free throw percentage.
Â
"I'm really excited to sign our first guy to the program. His intangibles are off the charts. I think he will bring really good experience to our team and his best basketball is still ahead of him," said Coburn.
Â
Although he has played three seasons of college basketball, Squire maintains junior eligibility. The NCAA will grant all winter sport student-athletes an additional year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
A 6-foot, 185-pound point guard originally from Montreal, Squire played prep basketball at Wasatch Academy in Utah.
Â
Squire is the first signee for Coburn who was named the Vikings' new head coach on April 16. Coburn has been with the Viking program for eight years, including five as an assistant coach and three as associate head coach. The Vikings currently have 11 players who may return for 2021-22, including four starters.
Â
Coburn anticipates more signings this spring.
