Vikings To Host Seattle, Montana In Final Home Duals

PORTLAND – The Portland State men's tennis team will look to build on a 5-5 overall record and 2-0 Big Sky mark in a pair of home duals this weekend.

The Vikings will face Seattle on Friday (11 a.m.) before closing out the weekend in a Big Sky matchup with Montana (11 a.m.). Both matches will be held at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center in Beaverton.

Portland State is 5-5 overall and 2-0 in Conference action. The Vikings secured their second Big Sky win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Montana State this past Saturday.

KEY STATISTICS

  • Through nine matches the Vikings as a whole have a 31-29 (.517) singles record and a 12-17 (.414) record in doubles action
  • Nikola Dimitrijevic and Tommy Edwards have won five of their last seven singles matches to lead the Vikings with six wins each
  • Duo Matteo Fortini and Edwards lead the Vikings with a 6-3 record at No. 1 doubles, winning four consecutive earlier this season

BIG SKY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Fortini earned his second career Big Sky Men's Tennis Player of the Week nod on Tuesday after going 2-0 against the Bobcats over the weekend. Fortini only lost one set in both No. 1 spots, securing his doubles match 6-0 alongside Edwards before cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win in singles play.

EDWARDS RECORD WATCH

Two singles victories this weekend will make Edwards the winningest singles player in program history. The current record holder is Nathan Boniel who secured 45 wins in his time as a Viking. Edwards sits at 44 following his win against Montana State on Saturday.

Edwards is also one win away from matching the program record for all-time Big Sky doubles wins. The senior from Hillsboro, Ore. will tie Ian Risenhoover at 20 wins if he earns a victory against Montana on Sunday.

SEATTLE

Seattle will enter Friday's matchup with a 2-7 overall record, falling in four of their last five matches. The Redhawks earned their last win on March 7 in a 5-2 defeat of Lewis-Clark State (Idaho).

The Vikings lead the all-time series 11-4 over the Redhawks, earning its most recent win in 2019 (6-1).

MONTANA

The Grizzlies will enter Sunday's dual following a matchup with the University of Portland on Saturday. Montana is currently 3-6 overall and has yet to play a conference match this season.

UM was picked to finish first in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches Poll released prior to the season.

The Vikings are looking to bounce back after falling 6-1 to the Grizzlies during the shortened 2020 season. Montana leads the all-time series 13-3.
