Box Score MCMINNVILLE – Coming off its first win of the season at Seattle on Friday night, the Portland State women's tennis team locked in a second consecutive dual victory with a defeat of Linfield College on Sunday (Feb. 21).
 
Portland State improves to 2-3 on the year while the Wildcats fall to 0-1 on the season.
 
"Our team was unstoppable today," senior Gerda Upeniece said. "The match was full of challenges and mental battles but we were able to fight back strong and put on a great performance."
 
Capu Sanoner and Makoto Ohara proved their young dominance once again at No. 1 doubles, defeating Tessa Kern and Lexi Matsunaga (6-2). Emily Rees and partner Lotti Meszaros finished their dual with a 6-1 victory while Ashley Ramirez and Upeniece snatched their second consecutive win at the No. 3 spot, 6-2.
 
Winning her match with ease was Meszaros in No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-1), while Ohara did the same on court three (6-1, 6-3). Sanoner was put to the test at No. 2 but ultimately came out on top 6-4, 6-4.
 
"Capu may have played her toughest match so far," Upeniece said following the match. "But she did an incredible job fighting the mental battle and finishing strong."
 
Emily Rees put up a 6-1, 6-3 defeat against her Wildcat opponent at the No. 4 spot followed by a commanding victory on court six from Upeniece (6-1, 6-0). Ramirez had her work cut out for her after pulling out a 7-5 defeat in her first set but was able to hold her own down the stretch, taking the match 7-5, 6-4 to clinch the Viking sweep.
 
Head coach Kyle Russell and the Vikings will look to carry their momentum into next weekend as they take on the University of Portland in a pair of duals. The Pilots will host on Friday, Feb. 26 before playing on the Vikings home court on Sunday, Feb. 28.
