Box Score SEATTLE – The Portland State women's tennis team put up its share of dominant performances against Seattle University on Friday en route to a 6-1 victory.
The victory marks the Vikings' first win of the season and their fifth under head coach
Kyle Russell. Seattle falls to 0-3 on the year.
The Vikings opened the night sweeping the field in doubles play.
Makoto Ohara and
Capu Sanoner locked in their first win as a duo at the No. 1 spot, defeating Seattle's Hannah Ganan and Peggy Rooke 6-1.
Lotti Meszaros and
Emily Rees teamed up for a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles while
Gerda Upeniece and
Ashley Ramirez picked up their first win as a duo at No. 3 doubles 6-2.
Portland State continued its momentum into singles action, clinching five of the six matchups. Freshmen duo Sanoner and Ohara emphasized the bright future of Vikings tennis, adding to their already impressive night with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Rees left no doubt at No. 4 singles, locking in her second singles victory of the year with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Ramirez did the same clinching her match 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot.
Upeniece competed in the closest match of the night, fighting her way to a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 victory to put the icing on the cake for the Vikings.
"It's super special for me stepping into a program being surrounded by such supportive and competitive teammates," Ramirez said following the match. "I can't wait to take this momentum into our next match and keep competing for one another."
The senior transfer also spoke highly of her freshmen teammates, "It was great seeing the freshmen play with so much energy and really embrace what it means to be a Viking."
Portland State will look for its second win of the season as they head to Linfield on Sunday for a dual match slated for 10 a.m.
