PORTLAND STATE COMPLETES RETURN TO PLAY AT 5-6/4-4
After an opt-out season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Portland State football program returned to a full season of competition in 2021. With two games to play in the season, the Vikings were still in contention for a post-season berth. However, losses to Big Sky Conference Champion Sacramento State and fifth-ranked Eastern Washington in the final two weeks had the Vikings finish the year at 5-6 overall, 4-4 in Big Sky Conference games.
       Â
Here is a look back at the Vikings' 2021 season:
       Â
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
- Portland State went 5-6 overall, 4-4 in the Big Sky. The 4-4 mark was PSU's best since the 2015 season. The marquee win was a 30-18 victory over 24th-ranked and defending Big Sky Champion Weber State.
- The Vikings had six players earn All-Big Sky Conference honors: 1st team: JR CB Anthony Adams (52T, 5 TFL, 5 PBU, 3 INT, 3 FR, 1FF); 2nd team: JR WR Beau Kelly (69 receptions, 981 yards, 10 TDs); SR QB Davis Alexander (266-432, 3,075 yards, 21 TDs, 12 INTs, 6 rushing TDs); JR DE VJ Malo (45T, 20 TFL, 10.5 SK, 3 FF, 2 PBU); Honorable Mention: FR WR Nate Bennett (50 receptions, 616 yards, 4 TDs); SR DT Semise Kofe (37T, 5.5 TFL, 2.5 SK).

- JR WR Beau Kelly led the Big Sky Conference in receptions (69), receiving touchdowns (10), total receiving yards (981), and would have led in punt return average (14.4) but did not reach the required number of returns... JR CB Anthony Adams led the Big Sky in fumble recoveries (3) and had six total takeaways.
- SR RB Malik Walker was named Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week after an Oct. 30 win over Cal Poly. Walker rushed 14 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Walker finished the season third in the Big Sky in rushing (879 yards) and second in touchdowns (11).
- FR WR Nate Bennett was named to the 22-player Jerry Rice Award Watch List during the season. The Jerry Rice Award recognizes the top freshman in the nation at the end of the season... SR QB Davis Alexander was selected to the 46-member Walter Payton Award Watch list. The Payton Award is given annually to the top offensive player in the nation at the FCS level.
- SR QB Davis Alexander finished his career second all-time in virtually every passing category at Portland State, trailing only Viking legend Neil Lomax, including total offense (10,473 yards), passing yards (9,215), touchdown passes (63), completions (708-1,223). Alexander also had 25 career rushing touchdowns (7th all-time), and with 88 total touchdowns ranks behind only Lomax.

ADAMS LEADS GROUP OF SIX VIKINGS NAMED ALL-BIG SKY
The Big Sky Conference released its All-Big Sky Conference football teams for the 2021 season, as chosen by league coaches, and six Vikings were honored. Cornerback
Anthony Adams was selected as first team All-Big Sky Conference. Quarterback
Davis Alexander, wide receiver
Beau Kelly and defensive end
VJ Malo were named second team All-Big Sky. Wide receiver
Nate Bennett and defensive tackle
Semise Kofe were selected as honorable mention All-Big Sky.
       Â
Adams, a junior from Newberg, had another All-American type season. The 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back ranked second on the team with 52 tackles. Adams also had five tackles for loss, five pass breakups, three interceptions, three fumble recoveries and forced a fumble. He was a consensus 2019 first team All-American and should be a top candidate for honors again this season. In three seasons of play, Adams has nine interceptions, four fumble recoveries, 31 pass breakups (third all-time) and 165 tackles. This is his second first team All-Big Sky honor.
       Â
Alexander, a 6-foot, 195-pound senior from Gig Harbor, WA, completed 266 of 432 passes for 3,075 yards, 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this season. He ranked second in yards and touchdowns in the Big Sky Conference. The 3,075 yards were also the seventh most in a season in PSU history. Alexander also rushed for 160 yards and six touchdowns during the season. Alexander was named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List in 2021. The Payton Award goes to the National Offensive Player of the Year. With 40 career games, and 35 career starts, Alexander ends his career with 9,234 passing yards and 63 touchdowns, both of which rank second all-time at PSU behind Neil Lomax.
       Â
Malo, a 6-1, 270-pound junior from West Seattle, WA, had 45 tackles, 20 tackles for losses, 10.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two pass breakups. He ranked second in tackles for loss and four in sacks in the Big Sky. Malo's 20 TFLs are the second-most for a season in school history and the most ever by a Viking at the Division I level. The 10.5 sacks rank eighth all-time and are the most at the Division I level and since 1988.
       Â
Kelly, a 5-9, 165-pound junior from Scottsdale, AZ, led the Big Sky Conference in receptions (69), receiving yards (981) and receiving touchdowns (10). He added 15 rushing yards, two pass completions in two attempts for 56 yards, and returned eight punts for 115 yards (14.4). The 69 catches rank as the seventh most for a season in PSU history. His 981 yards left him just short of being the 16th Viking ever to have 1,000 receiving yards in a season. The 10 touchdowns ties for ninth in a season in school history.
       Â
Freshman wide receiver
Nate Bennett, a 6-3, 195-pounder from Simi Valley, CA, ranked third on the Vikings with 50 receptions for 616 yards and four touchdowns. Bennett was also selected to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List, putting him among the top 23 freshmen in the country for National Freshman of the Year. He tied for sixth in the conference in receptions, 13th in yards and 12th in touchdowns.
       Â
Senior defensive tackle

Â
THIRDGILL NAMED TO BIG SKY COMMUNITY SERVICE TEAM
Portland State football player
Malik Thirdgill has been named to the Big Sky Conference Community Service team for 2021.
       Â
Thirdgill, a junior tight end on the Viking football team, has been active on the field, in the classroom and as a participant in a variety of extracurricular activities in his community.
       Â
The Community Service team, which is in its third year of existence, recognizes football student-athletes who have dedicated their time to helping others and have gone above and beyond in making an impact on their campus and community. The Community Service Team is made up of one individual football player from each of the league's 13 competing institutions. Award winners were nominated by their respective head coaches.
       Â
Thirdgill, from Portland's Central Catholic High School, just completed his third competitive season with the Vikings. He has been involved in a myriad of activities off the field. He has been a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as an executive representative. The goal of that committee is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.
       Â
In the midst of social unrest around the country over the past year, Thirdgill and his SAAC co-members went right to work. Along with Sofi Papastamos of the soccer team and football teammate
Brady Brick, Thirdgill was a co-creator of a "Social Justice Team." The object was to get PSU's athletics teams to learn more about social justice around the United States and the World. They developed ideas and a lesson plan that all Viking teams will choose from to read about, educate themselves and then present on social media. "We want to inform our student-athletes about what is going on in the world," Thirdgill said. "It is easy to see it on social media, but to get involved, we believe, will have a longer lasting effect."
       Â
Thirdgill has also been involved with PSU's freshman student-athlete mentorship program.
       Â
In addition, the native Portlander is a volunteer with Holy Redeemer Athletics and Big Yard Foundation.
Â

Southern Utah had only 136 yards after the first quarter and averaged just 2.8 yards per rush... But the defense forced a three-and-out and Southern Utah had to punt from its own five-yard line. It was returned by JR WR
Beau Kelly to the SUU 20, and a penalty moved it to the 10. One play later SR QB

Beau Kelly had another big game with seven receptions for 119 yards and two scores.
Â
ANOTHER DEFENSIVE GEM SETS THE TONE

The tone was set when the Vikings forced turnovers on the Bengals first three possessions, and forced five turnovers on the day. The defense also allowed a season-low 259 yards of offense. JR DE
VJ Malo had two strip sacks in the game among five total sacks.
