Vikings Finalize 2019 Signing Class

The Portland State soccer team has officially signed 10 players, adding to an already talented young group of players returning to the Park Blocks in 2019. Head coach Katie Burton and her staff have brought in players that match the playing style of the Vikings and provide competition at every position.

"We have a fantastic 2019 class coming in next fall. All around the group has an advanced soccer IQ and come from programs with styles similar to that of which we have been establishing over the past two years," Burton said. "The objective for this class was to create depth and competitiveness in each of our lines."

The Vikings lost two goalkeepers to graduation last season, leaving the roster with just one goalkeeper. They bring in Kaysha Bailey and Enya Hernandez to help build depth at the position. Bailey arrives from North Idaho College, where she was named the Northwest Athletic Conference East Region Goalkeeper of the Year. Hernandez arrives after being named All-League MVP Goalkeeper at Elsinore High School in 2019.

"Competing with current goalkeeper, Teri Walters, and helping fill the loss of two senior goalkeepers, will be Kaysha Bailey and Enya Hernandez.  Keysha brings athleticism and experience from her successful junior college career. While Enya's work ethic and desire to reach her potential rounds out a competitive goalkeeping environment."

Injuries played a major impact on the Viking defense last year, but with the hopes of better health as well as the addition of Liv Lagerquist and Sylvannah Winstone, the back line should be solid in helping the new goalkeepers.

"Liv and Sylvannah will add experience and grit to our defensive line," Burton said. "Liv gives us strength in aerial battles, vocal leadership and has the ability to adapt and play in any position in the back line. Our most recent addition, Winstone, brings European flare and true love for the game of soccer. She is well versed in the technical and tactical aspects of the game."

The midfield adds three players, two of them from high school's in the area - Sienna Higinbotham and Baylee Groom - and another transfer in Emilee Greves. Higinbotham comes from West Albany High School, where she scored 21 goals and added seven assists as a senior. Groom was named First-Team All-League three times at Sandy High School. Greve transfers to Portland State from Peninsula College where she was a North Region All Star in 2018.

"In the midfield, we add two local players, Sienna and Baylee, both stand outs on rival club teams," Burton said. "Sienna is an all around threat to the game. She's a box-to-box midfielder on both sides of the ball with great vision and awareness to score goals. Baylee brings finesse and is dangerous in the attacking third due to her natural knack for the goal.

Greves comes from a highly successful junior college and will be a staple in our midfield. She possesses strong fundamental principles, but also knows when to bring her flare."

On the attacking side, three new players all bring in unique strengths that will pair well to diversify the Viking attack. Chloe Huling was part of the KingCo Conference Championship team at Issaquah High School. Olivia Stone comes from Eureka High School, where she was named the Max Preps Player of the Year as a senior. Kailee-Rae Quartero played nine years of club soccer, leading her team in scoring twice.

"This forward class will bring new dimensions to the offense," Burton said. "Chloe brings pace and a dangerous attacking mindset. She's efficient at getting endline and creating dangerous scoring opportunities in the box. Olivia is a strong and tireless target that we will expect to hold the ball and be a vital connecting player as we try and advance our attack into the final 3rd. Kailee-Rae, who could also play in the midfield for us, adds technical flare and has the ability to play in tight spaces under pressure. She also has potential to be a dangerous 1v1 attacker for us."

This year doubles the size of the 2018 class that Burton brought in and should be a great addition to the long-term program goals that she, associate head coach Maureen Whitney and Jenny Lawrence have been building.

"We are extremely excited about this incoming class as each and every one of them was recruited because they compliment our current players strengths," Burton said. "This class will help solidify the changes we've been working towards within our team culture and enhance the progress we have made over the past two years."
