Vikings Drop Finale But Win Series Over Sacramento State

The final game may not have gone Portland State's way, but a series win on the road against Sacramento State has the Vikings in great position entering the final week of conference play. The Hornets won the series finale Saturday afternoon 3-0 in the final road game of the season for PSU.

The Vikings (18-27/7-7 BSC) head into the final week in a tie for third place in the conference with Idaho State and, despite the loss, clinched a spot in the Big Sky Tournament, which will take place back in Sacramento on May 8-11.

Sacramento State threw Savanna Corr in the finale after the Vikings handed her a loss in the opener of the series. The Hornets ace delivered with a fantastic performance, limiting the Vikings to just four hits in a complete-game shutout. But it took a big inning for the Hornets to get the win as Portland State's pitching staff and defense came through with a great performance of their own for the third straight game.

The Vikings nearly took a lead in the top of the second inning with the patience that led to the win on Friday. Sala Pedebone drew a walk with one out to set up Alexis Morrison. She ripped a double into left center to push Pedebone to third, but Corr escaped the jam with a pop-up and a strikeout.

Portland State registered just one hit over the next four innings while the Hornets had a big fourth inning. They put the leadoff runner on and brought her home with a double to left center. A two-run home run into left then put Sacramento State ahead 3-0.

In the seventh inning, Portland State did its best to start a two-out rally but they couldn't get a run across. Riley Casper came in for a pinch hit single and Marissa Bruno drew a walk, putting the tying run at the plate. If the Vikings needed a homer, Darian Lindsey was the best option with a team-high seven on the year. But Corr won the battle between two of the Big Sky's best, forcing a pop out to end the game.

Tayler Gunesch, Rachel Menlove, Morrison and Casper each recorded a hit for the Vikings while Bruno drew two walks. Katie Schroeder started inside the circle for Portland State, going three and one third innings while allowing seven hits and three runs. Serafine Parrish closed the last two and two thirds innings allowing just three hits and no runs.

Portland State returns to action for a doubleheader against Weber State on May 3. The first pitch will be at 1 p.m. and the games will be played at the Gordon Faber Complex in Hillsboro, Ore. The Vikings will celebrate Senior Day on May 4 at noon.

GAME NOTES: The Vikings are now 24-51 all-time against Sacramento State … Tayler Gunesch has now reached base safely in 12 straight games.
