NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second consecutive day, the Vikings suffered a heartbreaking loss in walk-off fashion but they were able to come away with a split on the second day of competition at the TSU Tiger Classic in Nashville, Tenn. The Vikings opened the day with a 6-1 win over Marist before falling to East Tennessee State, 6-5, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.Â
Â
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the final game of the tournament for the Vikings that was scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled so they finish the tournament with a 2-2 record to improve to 8-10 overall on the year.Â
Â
Jessica Flanagan led the Vikings at the plate, going 5-for-8 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored.
Ashley Doyle went 3-for-4 with a run scored on the day.
Darian Lindsey extended her hitting streak to 17 games after hitting safely in each game Saturday. She finished the day going 3-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and a team-high three RBIs.Â
Â
Lindsey improved her season average to .482 after hitting .500 (6-for-12) over the four games. Doyle had the biggest improvement after hitting .571 (4-for-7) over three games.Â
Â
Sala Pedebone provided the power for the Vikings over the four games. She hit .300 with a double and two home runs, a deep shot to center field Friday, and a bomb to left field Saturday. She tallied six RBIs on the weekend with a 1.500 OPS.Â
Â
Portland State batted around in the bottom of the first in game one against Marist to plate three runs on five hits. Lindsey singled to lead off the inning to extend her hitting streak but was thrown out trying to steal second. Flanagan doubled to left center before being driven in on a triple off the bat of
Alexxis Ponce. It was the fourth triple of the year for the Vikings. Ponce came in on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning.Â
Â
After a groundout,
Kaela Morrow doubled with two outs.
Rachel Menlove walked before
Marissa Bruno loaded the bases with a perfectly placed bunt single. Doyle was hit by a pitch to bring in the third run to make it 3-0 at the end of one.Â
Â
Sophomore pitcher
Haley Schimmel had a shutout going into the fourth inning before back-to-back doubles plated the only run of the game for Marist. After the two doubles, she set down the next three batters, including getting a strikeout to end the inning.Â
Â
Portland State got the run right back in the bottom half of the inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Morrow to make it 4-1. The Vikings added two more in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from pinch hitter
Ariana Abalos and an RBI double from Lindsey to go up 6-1.Â
Â
Schimmel got into a little trouble in the sixth after the first two batters reached on a single and a walk. Third-year Head Coach
Meadow McWhorter went to the bullpen to bring on
Katie Schroeder in relief. Schroeder induced an infield fly for the first out and then a fielder's choice for out number two. After a single loaded the bases, she got out of the jam with a strikeout.Â
Â
Schroeder threw a perfect seventh inning to close out the win for Schimmel, who is now 2-2 on the year. Schimmel allowed one earned on five hits over five innings. She walked two and struck out two.Â
Â
Portland State fell behind quickly in game two after allowing three runs, two earned, in the bottom of the second.
Serafine Parrish got the start for the Vikings and allowed the three runs before Schroeder once again came on in relief out of the bullpen. She was able to get out of the second with no more damage done.Â
Â
The Vikings' offense responded in the top of the third with three runs of their own to tie the game at 3-3. Ponce dropped down a squeeze bunt to bring in the first run before Pedebone hit her second home run of the weekend, a two-run shot to left, to tie the game.Â
Â
Portland State added two runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run single up middle by Lindsey to take a 5-3 lead. It remained a two-run PSU advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.Â
Â
Schroeder, who has been tremendously efficient when closing out games this season, gave up back-to-back singles to begin the seventh. A sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position with one out. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in a run and make it a 5-4 game. An RBI double tied the game at 5-5. Two batters later a single through the right side gave East Tennessee State the walk-off victory.Â
Â
Schroeder picked up the loss, falling to 4-4 on the year. She allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits over the final 5 1/3 innings. She walked two and struck out one.Â
Â
Due to Sunday's game being rained out, the Vikings will have a day off in Nashville before returning to Portland for their home opener against Southern Oregon on Wednesday, March 6. The doubleheader against the Raiders is a late addition to the Vikings' schedule. Â
