BOZEMAN, Mont. — After the earthquake of Donté Robinson's second straight Big Sky heptathlon title Friday, the Portland State track & field team got a couple aftershocks Saturday as they closed out the Big Sky Indoor Championships in Worthington Arena.
Â
Sophomore
Natalie Cummings provided the first aftershock as she scored a point for the Viking women with an eighth-place finish in the finals of the 60 meters. Cummings finished in 7.76 seconds, a time that would have set a new personal best if she hadn't run 7.67 in the prelims Friday.
Â
Cummings came into the Big Sky meet ranked 17th in the conference in the 60 meters, but out-performed the form chart with her placement in the final.
Â
Robinson, meanwhile, scored another three points for the Viking men with a sixth-place finish in the pole vault. Robinson, who set a new personal best while clearing at 15-02.25 (4.63m) during the heptathlon Friday, cleared 15 feet for the second straight day while topping out at 15-00.25 (4.58m) during the general pole vault.
Â
Robinson's placement in the general pole vault continued a run of three straight years for the Viking men where someone has scored in the indoor pole vault. Ben Cogdill was the Vikings' only scorer in the men's indoor pole vault before that run, as he placed fourth in 2007. Cogdill's fourth-place finish remains the highest finish ever by a Viking in the event.
Â
Robinson's individual point total of 13 points at the 2019 Big Sky Indoor Championships marked the second-best single-championship point total by a Viking men's athlete at the conference indoor meet. Sheldon Prince set the individual record with 14 points at the 2014 Big Sky Indoor Championships, when he won the 400 meters and placed fifth in the 200. Robinson also upped his career point total to 31, the most of any Portland State male athlete at the Big Sky Indoor Championships.
Â
Kaila Gibson and
Sarah Medved, who were both All-Big Sky performers during the fall cross country season, did their best to add more points to the Viking women's total while competing in the 3,000 meters. Gibson and Medved, who each ran in events Friday, placed second and third in the first section of the 3,000 meters while finishing in 10:14.81 and 10:15.37, respectively. Runners in the second section, knowing the time they'd have to beat, knocked Gibson and Medved down to 14th and 16th, respectively, however.
Â
Medved's time in the 3,000 marked a seasonal best for her despite running at elevation and having competed in the distance medley relay the night before.
Â
The Viking track & field teams will now turn their attention to the outdoor season, which gets underway next week with the Willamette Opener, March 2, in Salem, Ore.
