THE OPENING TIP
For the first time in 40 years, Portland State and the University of Hawai'i will meet up on the basketball court. The Vikings and the Rainbow Warriors play Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
    Â
PSU takes a 1-1 record into the contest after an opening rout of University of Puget Sound, and a road loss at Indiana. The Vikings most recent battle was a first-ever meeting with the Hoosiers in Bloomington. PSU provided a challenge to Indiana, losing 85-74.
    Â
Through two games, the Vikings continue to integrate eight first-year players on the active roster, impose their "Peery Pressure" to opponents and show improved shooting over last year's team. So far, signs are good, as the Vikings have averaged 84.0 points and forced 41 turnovers, but still hope to upgrade a .435 team shooting percentage.
    Â
JR G Holland "Boo Boo" Woods and SR G
Matt Hauser had big games at Indiana. Woods scored 27 points with three assists, while Hauser scored 21 with three assists. Each hit four three-point field goals. They lead the team in scoring thus far with 19.5 points and 17.0 points, respectively.
    Â
Friday night's game at Hawai'i marks the first time the teams have played since 1979. It will be the seventh meeting overall. The Rainbow Warriors won five straight played between 1969 and 1979 in Honolulu. The Vikings lone win in the series came in Portland on Feb. 2, 1968.
    Â
PSU will be playing the second road game in a stretch of six-out-of-seven away from home. The Vikings are back to host Portland on Nov. 20, then go out on a week-long four-game road trip as part of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic.
    Â
Hawai'i (2-1) hosted the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic over the past weekend, picking up wins over Florida A&M and Pacific and losing to South Dakota.
    Â
Friday's game at Hawai'i tips off at 7 p.m. HT, which will be 9 p.m. PT. It is televised locally in Hawai'i. There is no live stream available, but live audio can be found at http://player.listenlive.co/27971. Live statistics are available at www.ViksLive.com.

WHO IS HOT

• JR C
Sal Nuhu has nine blocked shots through two games, including a career-high tying six against Puget Sound.
• Portland State has won nine straight home games at Viking Pavilion.
Â
WHO IS NOT
• Portland State was out-rebounded by Indiana, 41-24.
Â
BOO BOO ON THE VERGE
Portland State point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods is on the verge of becoming the number one helper in Viking basketball history. Woods has 364 career assists in 67 games (5.4 pg). That total has him ranked fourth all-time at PSU. Woods, a junior, is only 65 assists away from the record held by Terry Adolph in 1976-78. Adolph was a prolific assist man in his two-season career at PSU, no doubt benefiting from having the second all-time leading scorer in NCAA history playing alongside him in Freeman Williams. Adolph averaged 7.8 assists per game in each of his two seasons, totaling 421 in 54 games. Behind Adolph is teammate Chucky Smith (1974-78, 392 assists) and "modern-era" star Derek Nesland (1996-2000, 371 assists).
    Â
As for Woods, at his current pace he would break the Portland State assist mark some time in late December of this season.
    Â
Woods is also on pace to reach 1,000 career points in late December. He would be the 19th Viking in history to reach that milestone (currently 861).
    Â
And finally, Woods now has 104 career steals, ranking eighth all-time at PSU. The school record is 128 by Calaen Robinson (2015-17). Woods would be on pace to set that record later this season.

Â
HAUSER FILLING A VOID
SR G

• Hauser is averaging 17.0 points while shooting .520 from the field, .364 from three-point range and .800 at the free throw line.
• Scored a season-high 21 points at Indiana (7-9 FG, 4-6 3-pt, 3-3 FT).
• He averaged 8.4 points and 2.4 assists in his 85-game career at Santa Clara. Included was a career-high 22 points against Portland State on Dec. 9, 2017 (a PSU win).
Â
YAHOO FOR NUHU
SR C
Sal Nuhu opened the season just as Vikings fans would have expected; by swatting away shots. Nuhu had six blocks against Puget Sound to go with 12 points and seven rebounds. Nuhu led the Big Sky Conference last season with 64 blocked shots (2.0 pg). That total ranked fourth in Portland State history for a season. Nuhu now has 73 career blocks, ranking fifth all-time at PSU.

THEY ONCE PLAYED AGAINST THE VIKINGS
The nature of modern college basketball has become a transient one. The Viking program is no different as PSU welcomed five Division I transfers and two junior college transfers to the roster this season (along with one true freshman). A few of the transfers have played against the Vikings in the past.
• SR G
Matt Hauser faced the Vikings on Dec. 9, 2017 while at Santa Clara. Hauser scored 22 points (8-12 FG, 6-8 3-pt), along with four rebounds and four assist. The Vikings won 87-84.
• SR F
Alonzo Walker faced the Vikings twice last season with playing for Idaho State. Walker had 10 points and six rebounds in a 69-67 ISU win in Pocatello. He had five points and eight rebounds in a 99-93 PSU win in Portland.
• Those two graduate transfers both have degrees.
Matt Hauser has his Bachelor of Arts degree from Santa Clara in Communications.
Alonzo Walker has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Idaho State in General Studies.
Â
VIKING REDSHIRTS
JR G
Kimani Binder will redshirt the 2019-20 due to an achilles injury. FR G
Jaden Nielsen-Skinner is also slated to redshirt the season.
