Viking Women Ranked 15th in USTFCCCA West Region Following Upset Win at Cougar Classic

USTFCCCA RELEASE

NEW ORLEANS –
Three upsets of regionally-ranked teams by the Portland State women's cross country team finally resulted in a ranking of the Vikings' own Monday, as the Viking women came in ranked 15th in the latest USTFCCCA West Region Poll.

The ranking marks just the third week in the history of the Portland State cross country program that the Vikings have been ranked in the West Region Poll. The Viking women were also ranked 15th in the West during two weeks of the 2014 season between the preseason and Week 1 polls.

The Viking women earned their latest ranking after upsetting regionally-ranked Washington State and Idaho while winning the Cougar Classic Friday. The Vikings won the women's competition at the meet with 34 points, 10 ahead of Washington State and 19 points ahead of third-place Idaho. The Vikings placed their entire top five in the top 11 of the women's 6k, while seniors Sarah Medved and Kaila Gibson led the way at second and fourth overall, respectively.

The Washington State women came into the meet ranked ninth in the West Region, while Idaho came in ranked 12th. The Vikings also beat the University of Portland at the Viking 'Rust-Buster' on Sept. 1, when the Pilots came into the meet ranked seventh in the region.

The Pilots rank sixth in the West Region in Monday's poll, while Washington State and Idaho remained at ninth and 12th, respectively. Idaho and Portland State are the only two Big Sky Conference teams ranked in the West Region. Six Big Sky teams are ranked in the Mountain Region poll on the women's side between Northern Arizona (eighth), Southern Utah (10th), Montana State (12th), Weber State (13th), Idaho State (14th) and Montana (15th).

The Vikings will next race Sept. 29 at the Charles Bowles Invitational, hosted by Willamette University at Bush Park in Salem, Ore.
