Portland State Football wrapped up its preseason camp on Thursday with a surprise trip to the Pacific coast and the announcement of team captains for the 2018 season.
The Vikings had their usual Thursday morning practice which Head Coach Bruce Barnum described as "really good, easily one of the best of camp." At a later meeting, Barnum informed his team of the culmination of preseason camp, and to "get their flip-flops and a towel" as they would be getting on a bus to Long Beach, WA for an afternoon and evening of leisure-time activities.
The Viking team enjoyed numerous beach activities that included volleyball, wiffle ball, spike ball, cornhole and a one-club closest-to-the-pin golf competition. Barnum dubbed the golf activity, "the most entertaining, by far."
A pie eating contest helped conclude the competitions.
An evening bonfire was the setting for the announcement of four team captains for the 2018 season. As voted on by the team, the captains are senior safety Artuz Manning, senior linebacker Houston Barnes, junior tight end Charlie Taumoepeau and junior running back Carlos Martin.
Friday's scheduled practice was cancelled, allowing players rest and rehab time. The Vikings will begin full preparation for their season opener on Saturday. PSU plays at Nevada on Friday, Aug. 31 in a 6 p.m. game. The game will be live streamed on the Mountain West Network.
