Big Sky Conference Statement
OGDEN, Utah – The Portland State softball season came to an abrupt and premature end Saturday night as it was determined that there was not adequate time remaining to complete the 2018 Big Sky Softball Championship Tournament as scheduled due to inclement weather and the amount of games that were postponed.Â
Â
Therefore, No. 1 Sacramento State, being the highest remaining seed in the winner's bracket, was awarded the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.Â
Â
According to league policy, no more than two games may be played by any team on a single day, which means that it is impossible for a team to come out of the loser's bracket and force an "if necessary" game.Â
Â
The double-elimination tournament ended with Sacramento State (2-0), Northern Colorado (2-1), Portland State (1-1), and North Dakota (1-1) still alive.Â
Â
The 2018 season was a turning point for the Portland State softball program under second-year head coach
Meadow McWhorter. The Vikings went 18-34 overall and finished fourth in conference play with a 10-10 record. Both win marks were the best since the 2013 season.Â
Â
Portland State had four players earn All-Big Sky first and second team honors:
Kaela Morrow (1st),
Darian Lindsey (2nd),
Rachel Menlove (2nd), and
Alyssa Burk (2nd). Lindsey was also named the Big Sky Newcomer of the Year.Â
