OGDEN, Utah – As the sun set beyond the left field fence, the Portland State softball team refused to have the sun set on its season. The Vikings held on to defeat second-seed Weber State, 4-3, in a win-or-go-home game on a rain-soaked day in Ogden, Utah.Â
The weather wreaked havoc on day two of the Big Sky Softball Championship Tournament. Overnight rain and field conditions delayed the start of the game 5.5 hours but it was well worth the wait.Â
Â
Portland State took a 4-1 lead into the top of the seventh, needing just three-outs to survive and advance. Weber State started the inning with a single and a double to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out. PSU starting pitcher
Alyssa Burk struck out the next batter looking for the inning's first out.Â
Â
Burk induced a pop out on the infield, her sixth of the game, for the second out. The next batter grounded to shortstop
Darian Lindsey for the would-be final out of the game. The ball popped out of the first baseman's glove, which allowed the runner to reach safely and the runner on third to come in to score to make it a 4-2 game.Â
Â
The next batter singled to right to drive in another run to make it a one-run game with the game-tying run just 60-feet away. Burk was unphased and went back to work. She worked a 1-2 count on the next batter before a fly ball to right ended the game to give the Vikings their first Big Sky Conference Tournament win since 2013.Â
Â
Burk was outstanding in the circle for the Vikings. She allowed three runs, only one earned, on nine hits. She walked one and struck four. She induced 12 flyouts in the winning effort. Â
Â
The Vikings tallied just four hits in the game but they made them count. After a scoreless first inning,
Kaela Morrow reached on a fielding error by the Wildcats' shortstop.
Alexis Morrison worked a four pitch walk to put two on. After a fielder's choice,
Tayler Gunesch reached on another fielding error, again by the WSU shortstop, to load the bases.Â
Â
After a strikeout for the second out,
Marissa Bruno hit a two-run single to left field, which drove in Morrison and
Kortney Craker, who reached on the fielder's choice, to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
Jessica Flanagan followed that up with her first triple of the season to bring in two more and put PSU up 4-0.Â
Â
Weber State loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third inning.
Darian Lindsey cut off a ball going up the middle and threw out the runner at first conceding the run for the second out. A pop out to Lindsey at short ended the inning with the Vikings still leading 4-1.Â
Â
The Vikings hit Weber State starting pitcher Kirtlyn Bohling hard but the balls kept finding Weber State players for outs. Bohling allowed four runs, none earned, on four hits. She walked two and struck out four in the loss.Â
Â
Portland State took the lead into the bottom of the seventh before Weber State plated two runs to make it a one run game. With runners on the corners, the Vikings got a fly out to right to end the game.Â
Â
The win keeps the Vikings alive in the double-elimination tournament. They will face No. 3 North Dakota in another elimination game, which is slated for Saturday, May 12 at 11:35 p.m. MT.
