Vikings Sweep Rockets in Dramatic Fashion to Open Home Slate

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Vikings took game one 11-8 in eight innings on a dramatic walk-off home run by Kaela Morrow and then held on to take game two, 6-5, for the doubleheader sweep of the Toledo Rockets Wednesday night at the Gordon Faber Recreation complex in Hillsboro, Ore.

Portland State (4-12 overall) put together a pair of great offensive performances in the sweep. The Vikings hit .355 over the two games and outscored Toledo (10-9) 17-13. The Vikings had six players record multiple hits between the two games, paced by Rachel Menlove and Morrow, who each hit .625, going 5-for-8 on the day.

Menlove tallied went a career-best 4-for-4 with three RBIs in game one, while Morrow went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four driven in. Morrow hit her first career triple in the first inning of game one before giving the Vikings' the 11-8 comeback win with a three-run shot in the bottom of the eighth. It was PSU's first extra-inning walk-off win since 2015.

In game two it was Tayler Gunesch who came up big at the plate. She hit her first career home run and drove in a career-high four runs as the Vikings took the second game, 6-5.

Toledo took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first of game one. Portland State plated two runs on Morrow's triple and a single from Menlove to make it 3-2.

Gunesch walked, stole second, move to third on a groundout and then came in to score on a double from Menlove to tie the game at 3-3.

Toledo once again took the lead with a run in the top of the fourth. The Rockets looked to plate more runs but the Vikings induced a groundout with the bases loaded for the third out.

The Vikings' defense was rock solid over the next three innings and did not allow another run. Morrow blocked the plate and tagged out a runner at home in a big collision to save a run in the fifth before a strikeout from Haley Schimmel ended the threat.

Portland State got out of another jam in the sixth with an inning-ending double play. Riley Casper snagged a hot line drive at second and then flipped it to Sydnee Machado at second to double off the runner.

Casper did it again in the top of the seventh on a popup on the infield. She snagged the ball out of the air at her shoe tops before getting the runner at first for another inning-ending double play.

The Vikings went to the bottom of the seventh needing one run to send the game into extra innings. They got just that when Darian Lindsey reached with one out. She moved to second on a hit from Morrow and advanced to third when the centerfielder bobbled the ball.

Menlove drove in Lindsey with her fourth hit of the game to tie it at 4-4. A fielder's choice ended the inning but the Vikings got the run they needed.

Toledo thought it put the game away in the top of the eighth. The Rockets loaded the bases with one out before getting a grand slam off Emma Detamore, who had come on in relief in the sixth. She hit the next batter but then settled down with a pop out to third and swinging strikeout end the inning.

Portland State has struggled when trailing late in games in recent years. The Vikings put all that history behind them and got to work.

Alexis Morrison was placed on second to begin the bottom of the eight due to tiebreaker rules. Kortney Craker reached on a fielding error to put two runners on. Casper singled to right to drive in a run and make it a three-run deficit.

An infield single by Gunesch loaded the bases for Lindsey. She singled to center to drive in two runs to tie the game at 8-8 and at least send the game into the ninth.

Morrow had other ideas. She hit a 1-0 pitch deep over the left field fence for a three-run walk-off home run. It was the Vikings' first extra-inning walk-off home run since Brittany Hendrickson in 2015.

The Vikings plated seven runs in the bottom of the eight, which is their most in a single inning this season. Their previous high was four runs in the first inning of their season-opening win over Sam Houston State. The last time Portland State scored seven runs in an inning was in the fourth inning of a 16-12 loss to CSUN in 2016.

Portland State took its momentum from game one into game two. After Toledo scored a run in the top of the first, Gunesch evened it in the bottom half with her first career home run.

The Vikings added three runs, two earned, in the bottom of the second. Gunesch drove in two with a bases-loaded single to right center. Another run came in on a fielding error by the Rockets' shortstop. All three came with two outs.

Toledo added a run in the third and another in the fourth off Detamore, who started game two, to pull within one at 4-3.

Morrison led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk. The Vikings loaded the bases with two outs before Gunesch drove in her fourth run of the game with a 10-pitch walk. After working the count full, she fouled off five-straight pitches before working the walk to give the Vikings the 5-3 lead.  The Vikings added an insurance run in the fifth to go up 6-3.

They needed the run as the Rockets plated two runs to make it 6-5. They had the bases loaded with two outs but Detamore induced a groundout to Casper at second to end the game.

Detamore threw 10 of the 15 innings on the day and picked up both wins. She allowed nine earned runs on 11 hits. She walked four and struck out six.

Portland State hits the road again this week for five games at the Rebel Classic hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev.
