Vikings Slug Their Way to a Sweep on Day 2 at Seattle U

SEATTLE – The Vikings plated 13 runs in the third inning alone en route to a 14-4 win over Bryant University before defeating Seattle University, 5-4, in extra innings on the second day of the Seattle University Invitational in Seattle, Wash.

Portland State picked up its first winning weekend of the year with its two victories Saturday. The Vikings hit .345 as a team on the day and came up big when it mattered. They hit .462 with runners in scoring position and .875 (7-for-8) with a runner on third and less than two outs.

Darian Lindsey and Kaela Morrow each tallied four hits, including two doubles each, and both drove in three runs on the day. Tayler Gunesch went 3-for-9 on the day with a double and a triple and was one of four Vikings to score three runs between the two games.

For as good as the offense was, the Portland State starting pitchers were equally as brilliant. SO RHP Emma Detamore opened the day with a win against Bryant. She allowed four runs, all coming in the first inning, on seven hits. She walked two and struck out a season-high six batters in the win.

JR RHP Alyssa Burk had a perfect game into the fifth inning against the Redhawks. She allowed four runs, one earned, on just four hits. She walked one and struck out six over nine innings of work in the win over Seattle.

Bryant took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first of game one off Detamore. The Bulldogs hit a two-run home run, followed by a two-run double, to take the four-run lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the Vikings got to work at the plate in the third. Marissa Bruno led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Gunesch singled to left before Lindsey brought both runners in to score with a double to right center. Morrow traded places with Lindsey with a double to right before Rachel Menlove did the same thing with another double to right to tie the game at 4-4.

Menlove's double drove the Bulldogs' starting pitcher from the game but the Vikings were not done. Alexis Morrison reached on a fielding error, which allowed Menlove to score to give the Vikings the lead. Kortney Craker reached on a fielder's choice, Morrison was forced out at second for the inning's first out.

After Craker stole second, Riley Casper walked. Ariana Abalos worked the Vikings' second-straight full-count walk to load the bases. Bruno, up for the second time in the inning, was hit by a pitch to bring in a run.

Gunesch then cleared the bases with a triple down the left field line to put the Vikings up 9-4. Lindsey doubled in her second run of the inning, as did Morrow and the Vikings lead 11-4. After a strike out for the second out, Morrison blasted her first home run of the season over the fence in left center to put the Vikings up 13-4 at the end of the third inning.

The 13 runs were by far the most in a single inning this season and are the most in at least the past decade. The Vikings tallied nine hits, while hitting for the cycle as a team in the third. They tallied six doubles, a triple, and a home run. Every starter reached and scored a run in the inning.

The Vikings added an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 14-4 lead.

After allowing four early runs, Detamore shut down the Bulldogs over the final three frames, including getting out of a jam in the fourth.

Portland State hit .458 (11-for-24) against the Bulldogs and went 8-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

After being shut out by the Redhawks Friday night, the Vikings took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the second of game two.

Burk, coming off a career-high 14 strikeouts in a win over Bryant Friday, picked up right where she left off Saturday against Seattle. She had a perfect game into the fifth inning before a fielding error ended that bid. The runner came around to score on a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at 1-1. The next batter broke up the no-hit bid with a bunt single before a groundout ended the inning.

Lindsey walked to lead off the top of the sixth. She stole second and then moved to third on a single to center by Morrow. Lindsey came in to score on a passed ball to give the Vikings the 2-1 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth.

Burk worked around a leadoff single in the sixth to maintain the Vikings' one-run lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.

After getting the first two batters to fly out, Burk surrendered a solo home run to left center, which tied the game at 2-2. She came right back and got the third out of the seventh to push the game into extra innings.

Both teams plated an unearned run in the eighth to make it 3-3 heading to the top of the ninth. The Vikings started the inning with a runner on second, who was quickly moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Morrison, in a pinch-hitting situation, singled on the infield to bring in the runner and give the Vikings a one-run lead.

After a strikeout for the second out, Gunesch drove in an insurance run. She doubled to left field, which drove in Morrison all the way from first, to put the Vikings up 5-3.

Seattle started with a runner at second to start the bottom of the ninth. The runner scored on a single to left to make it 5-4. After a walk, a sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position with one out. Burk went right at the next hitter, striking her out on three pitches for the second out. She then got ahead to the next batter, the same one who tied the game with a home run in the seventh, before inducing a fly ball out to left for the final out of the game.

It was Burk's third-straight complete game, and second-straight win. Over the past two games, she has allowed two earned runs over 16 innings pitched, allowed six hits, struck out 20 batters, and walked just four.

Portland State will conclude action at the Seattle University Invitational Sunday with its third and final game against the Redhawks. First pitch in Sunday's rubber-match is slated for 12:30 p.m. PT.
