SEATTLE – The Vikings split a pair of games to open the Seattle University Invitational Friday afternoon in Seattle, Wash. The Vikings defeated Bryant 6-1 before falling to Seattle U 2-0.

Portland State (5-16 overall) put together the complete game in their win over Bryant.
Alyssa Burk threw a complete game, while recording a career-high 14 strikeouts against the Bulldogs. The Vikings also plated six runs on 10 hits, highlighted by
Ashley Doyle's first career grand slam, the second of the year by Portland State.

The Vikings got another quality start by
Emma Detamore in game two against Seattle. She threw a complete game and allowed just one earned run but the Vikings were unable to plate a run in the loss.

Portland State hit .273 as a team with five different players recorded multiple hits on the day. Burk and Detamore combined for a 1.08 earned run average over the two games.

The Vikings took the lead early in game one with an unearned run in the top of the first against Bryant.
Tayler Gunesch led off with a walk before stealing second.
Darian Lindsey reached on a fielding error, which allowed Gunesch to score to make it a 1-0 game.

Portland State took a 5-0 lead in the top of the third when Doyle hit her first career grand slam, her third home run of the season.
Marissa Bruno singled to lead off the inning. Gunesch reached on a fielder's choice before Lindsey loaded the bases with a bunt single.

After the next two batter recorded outs, Doyle pulled a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence for the Vikings' second grand slam of the year. It is the first time since 2012 that Portland State has hit multiple grand slams in a season.

Burk set the first nine Bulldogs down in order to start the game, which included six strikeouts, five in a row. Bryant picked up its first hit of the game in the top of the fourth. The runner moved to second on a ground out before a double scored the Bulldogs' lone run. After a walk, two more strikeouts got Burk out of the inning.

Burk worked a perfect fifth, picking up two more strikeouts along the way. She walked two but struck out the side it in the sixth, bringing her strikeout total to a career-high 13. She added one more in the seventh to finish out the game with 14 strikeouts, the most since Anna Bertrand struck out 16 in 2011.

The Vikings added a run in the top of the sixth to make it a 6-1 win over the Bulldogs. Burk threw her fourth complete game of the season, allowing one earned run on just two hits. She walked four to go along with her career-high 14 strikeouts in the win.

Detamore posted her third complete game of the season in game two but did not get the run support Burk received in game one. She allowed two runs, one earned, on 10 hits. She walked two and struck out four in the loss.

Despite giving up the 10 hits, Detamore held the Redhawks to just 2-for-15 at the plate with runners in scoring position. She also was the beneficiary of a double-play with two runners on.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the second when a baserunner came around to score on a Portland State throwing error. A walk turned into a two-out RBI to give the Redhawks a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Seattle had runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh but Detamore did not allow another run. The Redhawks stranded 10 runners on base.

Portland State scrapped out five hits against Seattle but tallied multiple hits in an inning just once. The Vikings had a runner on second with one out in the third but back-to-back strikeouts ended the scoring opportunity.

The Vikings got a runner into scoring position with one out in the sixth but could not get the runner passed third. They went in order in the seventh to suffer their fourth shutout of the year, second in the last four games.

Portland State will take on the Bulldogs and Redhawks once again Saturday in Seattle with games slated to start at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
