Vikings Fall Twice on Day two at the Bobcat Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Vikings dropped a pair of games on the second day of the Bobcat Classic hosted by Texas State in San Marcos, Texas. The Vikings opened the day with a 6-4 loss to Sam Houston State before falling to No. 9 Florida State, 11-1 in five innings.

Due to weather concerns, Sunday's game against Texas State has been canceled.

Sam Houston State got on the scoreboard early with three runs, two earned, in the top of the first inning of game one. The Bearcats added another run in the top of the second to take an early 4-0 lead.

Freshman C Rachel Menlove drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the second inning. The Vikings worked the bases loaded after Kortney Craker singled up the middle and Ashley Doyle was hit by a pitch. Alexxis Ponce worked a six-pitch walk to bring in Menlove from third for the Vikings' first run of the game to make it 4-1.

After a scoreless top of the third, Darian Lindsey took a 1-0 pitch deep over the left field fence for her first career home run in a Portland State uniform to make it a 4-2 game. It was her third straight game with a hit and a run scored to start the season.

After Sam Houston State added a run in the top of the fourth, Portland State came right back with two of its own. Doyle led off the inning with a double to center. Marissa Bruno moved her to third with an infield bunt single. After Bruno stole second, Ponce hit behind the runners and singled through the right side, driving in Doyle and moving Bruno to third.

Taylor Gunesch flied out to left but Bruno was able to tag and score to make it a one-run game at 5-4.

The Vikings were unable to get anything going over the final three innings, while the Bearcats added an unearned run in the top of the sixth to take the game 6-4.

The Vikings' defense struggled in the day, tallying four errors, which allowed two unearned runs, which was the difference.

Ponce went 1-for-2 in the game with a pair of RBIs to go along with Lindsey's solo home run.

For the second-consecutive day, Portland State took on No. 9 Florida State in its second game of the day. Unfortunately, the result the second time around was similar to the first.

The Seminoles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. They added a run in the second and three more in the third to go up 8-0. Florida State made it 9-0 with a run in the top of the fourth before the Vikings were able to get on the board.

Alexis Morrison singled to center with two outs in the inning. She moved to second when Hannah Self reached on a fielding error. Morrison then came all the way in to score on a wild pitch to make it a 9-1 ballgame.

Florida State added two more runs in the top of the fifth to take the game 11-1 in five innings.

Lindsey went 0-for-2 against Florida State, ending her hitting streak to start the season.

The Vikings will return home for an early bye week before heading back to the state of Texas for the UTEP Tournament Feb. 23-25.
