HURRICANE, Utah —
Two career records…a second win in a row…a Big Sky win on the road…if this is an April Fools' Day prank, then don't tell us. Senior Sabina-Elena Preda and the doubles team of junior Siena Peri and senior Tracy Dong all set career records Saturday while leading the Portland State women's tennis team to its second straight win with a 5-2 road victory over Southern Utah.

Preda broke the Portland State career record for Big Sky wins in the match, surpassing her former teammate, Megan Govi, who set at the record at 20 conference wins from 2012-15. Additionally, Peri and Dong broke the career record for Big Sky doubles wins by a team with their eighth win together, and also tied the career record for wins a No. 1 doubles at 13. Peri also tied the individual career wins record at No. 1 doubles with her 20th win at the position, equaling the record that Molly Knox set from 2008-09.

The records always taste a little sweeter when they come in team wins, however, as they did Saturday with Preda, Peri and Dong leading the way. The Vikings pulled out a close doubles point to get out to a 1-0 lead early in the dual, and then won four of six matches in singles to win, 5-2.

Peri and Dong got the Vikings started in doubles, as they beat Mikala Lowrance and Teresa De Enrique Schmidt, 6-2, at line one.

The Vikings led 5-2 in the other two doubles matches at that time, as well, but things got interesting as Southern Utah won four straight games in both matches to take 6-5 leads in each. Both matches went to a tiebreaker, and the Thunderbirds took the early advantage in both tiebreaks with a 5-1 lead at line two and 4-1 lead at line three.

Fortunately for the Vikings, Preda and freshman Sally Partington found their game again at just the right time, winning six of the final seven points in the tiebreaker at line three to pull out a 7-6 (5) win that clinched the doubles point for the Vikings.

The comeback must have helped fuel Preda in singles, too, as she played the most dominant match of the day at line five while beating Southern Utah's Cloe Stocking, 6-0, 6-1.

Partington won her singles match, as well, following her comeback win in doubles with Preda. Partington won a close first set against De Enrique Schmidt at line four, 7-5, and then closed out the match with a 6-2 win in the second set.

Sophomore Taylor Rees clinched the dual for the Vikings for the second straight match, winning a pair of close sets while beating Southern Utah's Laura Martin Lozano, 6-4, 7-6 (3) at line six. Rees also clinched the dual for the Vikings in their 4-3 home win over Montana last Sunday, and now leads the Vikings with six dual-season singles wins this season.

With the dual decided following Rees' win, Peri and Dong went to match tiebreakers at lines one and two.

Dong lost a close first set to Lowrance at line two, 7-5, but came out on the right end of another close set in the second, 6-4. Dong then controlled the ensuing match tiebreaker to wrap up a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) win – her third Big Sky win at line two this season.

Peri did not have as much luck in her match tiebreaker, unfortunately, as she fell, 10-6, to Southern Utah's Evgenia Marushko at line one. Peri won the first set off Marushko, 6-0, but lost the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (1), before falling in the ensuing match tiebreaker.

The Vikings will look for more wins on the road next weekend, as they head to Colorado for matches at Air Force and Northern Colorado next Saturday and Sunday.

Match Notes: The Vikings improve to 4-1 all-time against Southern Utah following Saturday's win, and have won four matches in a row in the series…The Vikings improved to 2-1 all-time at Southern Utah with Friday's win.
