STOCKTON, Calif. – The Vikings dropped their final game of the Louisville Slugger Invitational to the University of the Pacific Tigers, 7-3, in six innings after the game was shortened due to travel arrangements.
Â
Freshman OF
Marissa Bruno extended her hitting streak to eight games with her third-straight multi-hit game of the year going 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, and a stolen base against the Tigers. She is now one of three Vikings with three multi-hit games on the year.
Â
Bruno leads the team in batting average (.351), slugging percentage (.486), and on-base percentage (.415). She is tied for the team lead in runs scored (5) and doubles (3).
Â
Senior OF
SheaLee Lindsey also extended her hitting streak to eight games with her second multi-hit game of the year with a pair of bunt singles.
Â
Portland State (1-14 overall) got a runner into scoring position with two outs in the top of the first inning but was unable to drive the runner in. That would be a trend in the game as the Vikings went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and 1-or-16 with runners on base, stranding nine base runners in the process.
Â
Pacific (10-9) got on the scoreboard in a big way in the bottom of the first. The Tigers hit a pair of three-run home runs off PSU starting pitcher
Emma Detamore, forcing her early exit.
Alyssa Burk came on in relief and got the next two outs to get out of the inning.
Â
The Vikings picked up an unearned run in the top of the second after freshman C
Hannah Self singled to right field before working her way around to score to make it 6-1.
Â
Burk gave up a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third to make it a 7-1 game. After that, she settled down and retired nine of the next 11 batters to close out the game.
Â
Portland State plated a run in the fourth and the fifth innings to make it a 7-3 game but were unable to drive in any more, falling in six innings.
Â
The Vikings hit the road for one more non-conference tournament next week at the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. Portland State will face New Mexico State, DePaul, UNLV and Southern Illinois. Â
