Vikings Head to Stockton for the Louisville Slugger Tournament

FIRST PITCH

     After picking up their first win of the season, the Vikings hit the road again this week for the Louisville Slugger Tournament hosted by the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. 
     Portland State opens week with a doubleheader against the East Carolina Pirates (11 a.m. PT) and host Pacific (3:30 p.m.) on Friday, March 3. The Vikings hit the dirt twice again on Saturday, March 4 against East Carolina (10:00 a.m.) again followed by Seton Hall (12:15 p.m.). They finish the weekend with another game against Pacific on Sunday, March 5 at 12:15 p.m.

FIRST WIN
Portland State picked up its first win of the season with a 4-3 win over Rhode Island in the final game of the GCU Invitational last weekend in Phoenix, Ariz. Not only did the Vikings get their first win of the year, but it was the first NCAA Division I win for first-year Head Coach Meadow McWhorter.  

QUALITY STARTS
Sophomore RHP Alyssa Burk threw her best two outings of the year last weekend at the GCU Invitational. She threw her first complete game of the year, allowing  just two runs, one earned, on five hits over 6.0 innings in a loss to Grand Canyon. Burk picked up the Vikings' first win, allowing three runs, two earned over 7.0 innings against Rhode Island, while striking out a career-high 11.

SPEAK SOFTLY AND CARRY A BIG STICK  
Freshman C Hannah Self has started her Portland State career off with a bang. Her first career hit was a solo home run against Mercer (2/11). She then tripled and doubled in her first multi-hit game against Rhode Island (2/26). 

SITUATIONAL HITTING
Over the past two games the Vikings have been coming up big with two outs. They are 11-for-27 with two outs and have tallied six two-out RBIs. Portland State is also 7-for-20 with runners in scoring position over the past two games. 

COMING ON STRONG
Freshman OH Tayler Gunesch came on strong at the plate last week at the GCU Invitational. She hit safely in four-of-five games with her first two multi-hit games. She went 6-for-13, .461, with a double, RBI, and a run scored over the last five games. 

YOUNG SQUAD
Portland State added 11 freshman to the roster heading into the season. The 11-member freshman class is tied for the largest in the country this year.
